The "Fire-Bowl" thread

Funny that this thread got "fired up" again today.

We had the bowl performing cooking duty this very evening.
Buddy from worked stopped by with 6 bone-in ribeyes and 3 "regular" ribeyes.
9 steaks for 3 adults (and 2 teenage daughters who eat less than half a steak apiece).
The wife rustled up some veggies and homemade bread. Salad with wild foraged and domestic veggies.
We had a beautiful evening eating at the picnic table under "disease tent #1"! LOL!
Pandemic or not. Job or not. I could really give a crap less. BEAUTIFUL evening for relaxing in the woods!

I love you man. And Becky. And the girls. And the things ya'll find in life that bring happiness. Keep enjoying those very things that bring so much satisfaction in the lives of so many people who interact with your family.

I love all ya'll Hills. :D

Did you build that arm and grate or buy a kit. I really want to buy or build a nice Santa Maria style cooker. And that look pretty nice.

Thanks. A friend's Dad built the boom and welded the mounting bracket on the bowl. I bought a cooking grate, took the legs off and drill holes for the S hooks. I picked up some stainless steel chain to hang it with. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. I can take the grate off and hang a pot when needed. I like being able to raise and lower it too. When I picked up my bowl from Earl I didn't even think about getting a grate from him at the time.

Looking at the dates of the OP, it makes me wonder if is there somewhere that these bowls are available these days?

Please advise!
His name is Earl Thurmond (I think) in/near Sanford. @thrillhill can probably hook you up with his contact.

I am not that skilled or a welder so I guess I’ll keep saving for a Santa Maria grill.

Same here, welding is not in my skill set.

Gosh Bill, I appreciate the invitation and I'm sure it was a great time but I need to stay close in case the wife drops her bottle of nail polish and needs me to pick it up....

The gentlemen’s name is Earl Thurman and I’ll send you a PM with his number. I believe he’s still got a couple left. Pleasant man to deal with and to talk with. Wish I had his welding skills.

I bought a cooking grate with mine but I never used it because it was rusty. Ya'll got the same stuff I did. how'd you make it safe to cook on? I'd really like to be able to cook steaks like that...

Just get it hot over the fire and keep brushing cooking oil on it.

We had to do that off and on the first few times we used it. Probably 10 or 15 times total.

Haven't had to do that in years now.

It's treated bout like a cast iron frying pan.

The rust will burn right off when it gets hot hot. Then brush your cooking oil on. Once it burns that off brush it on again and remove the grill to let it cool and soak in.

I came home early from the foundry today and we cleaned up the rest of a pine that had fallen from our driveway into our neighbors yard. We were going to light the fire bowl just as it was starting to get dark, but storms rolled through. Maybe another evening this week!
Here are pics from 01-Apr. Forgot to post them then

What a beautiful weekend. I wish it wasn't going to frost but I do love this kind of respite in the weather.

I found out today that Monday is going to be my last day of work. I am sitting here in the rocking chair a few feet from the freshly lit fire bowl. Oddly enough I have no plans to partake of any beverages this evening. Despite that, I find myself really not worried about my current situation. Inner peace is a good thing. Almost as good as a fire bowl on a cool weekend!

Man I love that bench Bill. Simplicity at its finest!

Yeah, that bench has a little history to it.

I've had the "seat part for 23 years now. Longer than I've had my wife. LOL!

My cousin and I were working at a local lumber mill in our early 20s. All we did was pine. He had ran that log through at 6 inches and it threw sparks the whole way through. He called me over and I decide to throw it over the railing to the floor below and we could maybe run it through the big chopper later. It was full of bullets and I knew we couldn't do anything else with it.

A few weeks go by and I finally get around to asking the boss-man if I could have it for a bench.

We picked it up with the forklift and put it in the dry kiln. Ran it twice. It was staring to split a little.

At that point it was so light I threw it over my shoulder and carried over to the treatment plant myself.

After it went through the treatment process THREE TIMES it took 6 of us to get it into the back of my little Nissan truck. And man she was squatting with that thing in the back.

Brought it home, set it on four 12 inch blocks, stuck a treated 2X6 in one of the blocks as a backrest, and been sittin here ever since.

I am quite sure it will outlast me.

@thrillhill got dimensions for the sizes? Trying to measure and see what I can use...

Current batch:

Large: 37" across 24" high

Small: 30" across 16" high

The sizes can vary depending on where he gets the tanks from. But I just happened to have a current large and small on hand that I bought for 2 different friends from out of town to come pick up. I don't have any mediums around here. Not sure what size they are right now.

Some sauerkraut for the brauts. No pics of the brauts, too hungry.
I’m building this off to the side of the pool. I need someplace to keep my bowl other than the carport. I’m going to have a cover built for it to keep the water out.
