I have been trying to find the right truck for a few weeks now and i just havent been able to.
The wife took off today since I located exactly what I was lookong for. I already had everything lined up with the bank with the bank before hand, they just told me to pick out what I wanted.
So we loaded up at 8am and headed down to Mooresville North Carolina. The truck was a 2005 King Ranch F350 single rear wheel 4 door, 4 wheel drive it was pretty much everything I was looking for in a truck.

The bad
We roll onto the lot and I instantly spot it in the lineup of trucks out there and everything looks just as pictured.... at first. So I hop out of the wife's van with lots of excitement and anticipation and very anxious to look it over. But something very quickly catches my eye. And it's one of the worst things I expected to find.... Rust.

The ugly
The truck had multiple rust spots along the fender Wells and the frame was very flaked with rust. The sad thing about this is I had a conversation with the dealer before I drove down there about the truck and he never mentioned it. I'm all for doing business as honestly and as fairly as possible. To not take accurate pictures of that and to not let somebody know beforehand when they tell you they are driving an hour and a half away is just not the right way to do business. After having a very short and very heated conversation I left the lot.

The good
We pulled over in a local parking lot and I started the process of looking for another truck. I had mainly been looking for an F-250 or F-350 single rear wheel. I didn't really want a dually just because I truthfully didn't need that much truck. I came across an 03 F-350 with a hundred and seventy thousand miles on it and decided that I might as well give the guy call. I called the guy and I explained to him that I had driven an hour and a half away from him when I was already two hours away from him before I left this morning. That it would take me awhile to get to him and that I had a pregnant wife in the front seat and two kids in the backseat and I would hate to drive all that way if we couldn't come together all numbers. He gave me an accurate description and told me what he was willing to do, I had already looked up the truck and he was well below book. I told him to let me talk to the wife and I would call him back to let him know if we were heading that way. So after talking to her about two minutes she told me that if it's what I wanted that we needed to go and get it. So I called the salesman back and told him we were on our way he said great he would go ahead and top it off and have it ready for test drive. I pulled onto the lot and it was parked right where he said it would be and he was patiently waiting for me to show up. He's threw me the keys after I looked it over and asked me if I wanted to take it for a test drive. So me and my son took it for a test drive while the wife waited back at the dealership. While she was there talking with our salesman she learned that there was a guy waiting on a lot to buy the truck. But that the owner/salesman had told him he could not sell it without giving me the first chance since he already had started making a deal with me. I came back from the test drive and was pretty much in love. I told the salesman to get me a bill of sale and I will go to the bank and be right back. I overheard the guy that was waiting tell his salesman that he would test drive a different truck. While I wasn't necessarily looking for this much truck I am very happy with it. Its a 03 6.0 4wd King Ranch that has already had the egr deleted with only 173000 on the od. 20180122_215733.jpg

It can be tough to find straight shooters in the car business, glad to hear you found a good one with a truck that fit your needs.

I love how you say, "only 173k miles" lol. I know, I know, that's nothing for a diesel but it still sounds funny to me.

yeah I had to explain it to my wife as well. But trust me trying to find a 4x4 power stroke with 4 full doors not beat to crap with less then 200000 miles for less then 12000.00ish is very difficult.

Glad it all worked out except for the missing Cummins badges on the side of it. Lol
look Im a big mopar man, but you cant get a cummins with a mechanical injection 12valve with full size back seat. And imho thats the only one worth owning lol.

Nice truck! I used to own the exact same one that I bought new in December of 02. It was one of the first ones made.

On the 6.0’s it’s not as important to delete the EGR valve as it is to delete the EGR Cooler. This is the thing that will leak and destroy the engine.

Enjoy!!!!

this is the truth, thankfully thia ine has already been done. In march it is going to get the heads studded, just to stay ahead of the game.

You paid less than $12k for that? You need to buy a lottery ticket. Way below book is right.

Exactly what I was thinking.
Something sounds fishy.
the trick is to get your own financing, keep looking, pay attention to how long its been sitting on the lot, and be willing to drive to go get it. Its better to look for a saturated area with multiples of the same thing. after 90 days the lot is very anxious, plus this guy had 3 other f350's on the lot. It was originally priced at 16000.00.
when we were looking for a mini van for the wife I used the same approach. Last year I found a used 2016 Chrysler Town and Country, fully loaded, with only 19000 miles on it. It was a dealer demo, It had been on the lot 96days, and after haggling back and forth we got it for just North 15500.00ish otd.

Nice truck.
My folks had an F550 dually that they use to tow a 31 foot Teton. Had the full Banks turbo upgrade. Leveling airbags on the rear axle. Dual front disks.
It got a lot of attention driving it without the trailer.
That truck saved their lives in a wreck.

Trucks are crazy right now. Even FSBO trucks are marked at lot prices in some cases. FB marketplace is a lot like that. Spent a couple months looking late last year. Ended up buying the first one I actually test drove. I know the owner of the dealership and that truck was CLEAN. Like 26K or so miles and I put the first scratch on it as the second owner. I ended up having to raise what I was willing to pay to get the truck I wanted. Last go around I got a Toyota Tacoma, extra cab, 4x4 with 75K miles for $11,700. That truck now is $20k or more. I can get at least half of what I put in the truck back today and I put 100k on it. Crazy market for sure.

They clog up as well. If you're ever looking at someone's 6.0L and the exhaust manifolds, exhaust crossover pipes, and the turbine housing on the turbocharger are bright pink, they've had/have a clogged up EGR cooler.

I feel your pain. I recently was looking for a 3/4 ton 4x4. I ended up with a 06 ram powerwagon 2500. They are hard to find in decent shape used.

I hope everyone appreciates how I am not making any sarcastic comments about this.

Obviously the market is different for you than for me. Around where I live that truck would have sold in less than 30 days at the sticker price or more.

it wasnt in my area I drove past Durham to get it, lol

This...my truck is starting to get some serious rust around the rockers and rear fenders. However, I cannot see myself dropping north of $15K on a gasser with over 100K miles on it. Hoping for the market to take make a sharp correction in the near future.

That’s a pretty truck. The 6.0’s scare me too much but I understand the bulletproof conversions turn them into 500k engines.

The 6.0's have one of the best transmission that Ford ever produced. The problem with them is they had torque to yield head bolts and a poorly designed EGR cooler. Do a proper EGR cooler delete and stud the heads and you have a great engine. but they can be a little maintenance sensitive since they are a heui pump system.

And injectors. Don't forget the flaky injectors.

It's a real shame they never mated the transmission from the 6-point-OH-NO with the 7.3L International engine. That would be a million mile machine.
