The Highwaymen

Hell yes, that looks awesome

Last April I was fortunate enough to find myself in Waco, Texas at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum. It is a wonderful place to visit. I have never seen so many Colt single action revolvers in one place before. There were sections dedicated to well known Rangers and there was a section on Frank Hamer. I know that I too a picture of it but I cannot find it now. I think I lost some pictures when I changed phones.

Damn, John Dunbar and Woody the bartender have gotten old!!!

I was in at Woody Harrelson and Kevin Costner, I was not disappointed.

I Thought they did a good job with the movie. Hamer was a helluvah guy from what I’ve read, and I’m not even sure if they did him justice in the movie. Photos of the car Bonnie and Clyde were in show it just shot to hell.

What’s the gore level? Wife won’t watch anything with me that has graphic/detailed gore. Band of Brothers is the worst she’s stomached for me.

Movie was Very good. Even a line in it about Ole Lucky. Hamer's son said Frank never left a room without Ole Lucky. Listen for the mention, we did. Ole Lucky was a 4 3/4 inch profusely engraved Colt SAA with Ivory grips. It was Silver Plated. Costner carries Ole Lucky in his waistband the whole movie. Great tiny detail they got right.

Just started watching it.

I love the old gangster line of movies/history

My dad went to school in Florence with Melvin Purvis’s kids. He’s the G-man who was involved in killing Pretty Boy Floyd and John Dillinger, among others.

@BatteryOaksBilly and @Geezer might have some knowledge of him from the old days

Melvin Purvis had three sons, two of whom are deceased. The surviving one wrote the book which is now the movie Public Enemies with Christian Bale and Johnny Depp, if you want a movie that’s got a real connection to the gangster crime wave of the 30s

I have been in Melvin Purvis' home in Florence. He spoke to our school once. He was an attorney and owned the radio station in Florence. He was about 5 foot six inches 135 pounds. I dated his niece Lynn Purvis in Jr. High School. He had one son that had substance abuse problems and sold A LOT of his Dad's stuff. Including 4 Colt SAAs , 2 matched pair, engraved with Ivory and Pearl grips on the 2 pair. A friend of mine bought them for $1,000 in about 1978. Only Heaven knows where they are today.
His niece once told me that he slept in a different room of the house every night. Never did know if he was hiding from the Gangsters or Hoover.

Wife and I both enjoyed this movie, BIG TIME.

Considering his murder was never solved it wasn't enough.

If anyone hasn't heard the story of Melvin Purvis that would be a good read.

His murder? Never heard it called anything other than an accident or possibly a suicide

I saw a documentary on this once. The coroner declared it a murder then the FBI came in and "investigated" declaring it a suicide.

The FBI had black balled him after he got too much attention from the media, attention that Hoover was pissed about not coming to him. The FBI followed him after he quit and threatened anyone who thought about hiring him. If it hadn't been for the war and him enlisting he may never had worked in his field again.

The day he died there were two guys town asking directions to his place.

From Wikipedia,The FBI investigated his death and declared it a suicide, although the official coroner's report did not label the cause of death as such...

Edit, I believe this was the show I saw. PBS has it locked up if you're not a subscriber though.

Enjoyed it , Costner and harrelson did an excellent job.
Hammers widow sued the makers of the Beatty, dunaway, version and won an out of court settlement for portraying hammer as a buffoon.

Really appreciated this show and much of the humor along with it. Really makes you think about how much the world has changed with media, police, etc. And at the same time, how some things really haven't changed.

Now to watch Public Enemies again to get both sides...

I saw Highwaymen a few weeks ago. Plan to watch it again next week. I have seen several shows on Waco. Some made for TV, but one that was on VHS was made by an independent and made the ATF and FBI look really bad. Only one I have seen on Ruby Ridge was the made for TV version.
