The New "What Did You Do to Prep Today" thread

Today we’re breaking up 3.5lbs of corn starch into smaller bags for longer storage, or are we?

Another 1000 rounds of 62gr. 556. Academy (Rockhill) sti9ll has them at 60 cents a round.

Bought two more Berkey black water filters. Hope they're real, and not fakes.

Academy still has 5.56 at .60 around. Matthews store had plenty. Also found 72 kits by Ready Wise at $10.00 each in Lancaster, SC. All good for 15 yrs.
72 hour food kits?

Yes, at Lancaster Wal-Mart. Back in sporting goods. Sorry didn't specify.
$10 is a great price. Wise isn’t as good as mountain house in my opinion, but I’d buy a pallet of those. Nothing I can’t fix with some seasoning

I’ve got a walk in closet full of no 10 cans of this and wise brand stuff
I picked up a couple of those kits when I was at Bill’s in Vass some years ago when the pickins were slim in the last “scare". But my preference is the #10 cans also. Mountain House keeps revising how long they say they will last. Just gets longer and longer.

nothing recently, however with the new year,
it is time to rotate canned goods stock.
find out what is low.

How many of you guys prep with children? Specifically small children.
For me, children,,,,ten of them,,,,was one of the biggest motivating factors for prepping. As you could probably imagine we do a lot of bulk food storage. We realized that with so many family members we were vulnerable if we didn't prep but had twice as many hands for prepping if we did. We can deer meat, apple sauce, cider, store dry beans and run a bulk food coop. This year we grew the biggest garden we have to date. We have a modest root cellar for squash and pumpkins and grow bloody butcher corn. I've posted lots of these projects. For us, prepping is about developing traditional skills over stocking up stuff. My kids learn to hunt, trap, farm etc at a young age. My kids wouldn't know what to do with a smartphone but I have a 7 year old who can stick a hawk in a tree from 25 yards every time. Over the years my prepping has changed, e.g. the whole idea of "bugging out" with little ones is just not feasible, but I have a plan if I should need to.

This week I took advantage of the single digit temps and set my hard cider carboys out in the frigid cold. Prepping is using even the extreme weather to your advantage. Plus, eliminating the water has allowed me to reduce my product from 3 carboys down to one. This has the advantage of saving space for other food storage...hehe. I can't justify a 5 gal oak barrel because I'm saving up for a thermal scope, so this year I will be adding some charred oak spirals for a minimum of 6 weeks of bulk aging. I have a French floor corker that will seal the deal on the final product in a couple months. I should have about 20-23 wine bottles worth to bottle age for future consumption or trade when the world finally unravels.
