Not to sure where to put this but it it could count as it involves accessory's and this is very much a vent (so let me know if this is in the wrong place) … you see when you are as poor as me collectable firearms are just about as horrible to find as it gets... I have 800 dollars to find a 1903 or m1 garand I have a zuave rifle with no hopes or plans of how to get an actually historically accurate rifle to use I’ve always had to cut corners in the ways of these guns of corse I’d want the best of what I can get but that is almost never enough… these complications are always confounded even more so when I need a bayonet and cleaning kit for both of these not to mention the taxes and such and that leaves me all over 1200 for a musket and God knows how much for a ww2 rifle… reenacting is all I really have in terms of hobby but my lord is it EVER stressful

(Admittedly maybe not even a sentence, since there’s no punctuation at the end…must’ve used up all his periods in the multiple occurrences of drama dots) 🤣

My wife and I are relatively well off. But we have four kids who have this annoying habit of demanding to be fed and clothed. So our money is pretty tightly controlled.

With that said, here is what I do: I have a “squirrel fund” in cash that I hide away. Whenever I get money as a gift, or money for a side hustle I put it in the squirrel fund. Every few weeks I’ll put another $20-40 bucks in it. Over the course of a few months this grows relatively quick. Then when I see something I want, I take it from the squirrel fund. It doesn’t impact the bills, savings, or anything.

So, there is an idea: set up a stash and feed it $20 per week. Whenever you get extra cash pay yourself first. I’m just a few months you will have the cash for what you want.

And buy punctuation first.

i see I’ll have to give this a try one day I’ve never truly tried to make a so called savings jar or a squirrel jar as you so delightfully put it

Maybe reenact as a military surgeon?
I've thought about getting into it as a small time sutler or cook, or some other part of the train. Still a fair expense but it's a deal easier to find pots and spoons than sanely priced arms. Plus my rotund nature makes me a natural.

Units do well to find folk like you… we don’t just need solders but we need cooks and quartermasters and followers members of the baggage trains… it’s a shame the roles are mostly over looked

If I was a man of means I'd want a whole cook wagon and a small crew to run the beasts and the kitchen. Sit my fat and happy self on a stump and feed everyone period recipes with a mug of small beer and a good cheese.

I've done larping in the past, which is just storied reenacting of things that never happened after all and I had the most fun as a Sancho Panza.
