Some of you may be familiar with "Into the Wild" Chris McCandless story.
They've been debating pulling the bus out for years, too many dumb people inspired by the book and then the movie. Well they did it. Pretty cool sling load.

That location had become a pretty popular hiking Destiination. Lots of people going to see that bus.

Was it creating a hazard? I mean it's a bit of a historical marker.

Or is this just more cancel culture?

The articles all say that it was creating a hazard. In AK there are plenty of hazards once you leave the road system, I think this was just an attainable goal for tourists with few skills to deal with unanticipated problems and inadequate knowledge to anticipate problems.

Saving stupid people from themselves

wondered how the bus got there in the first place...
"Fairbanks City Transit System Bus 142 is an abandoned 1946 International Harvester K-5 that is parked in a clearing along the Stampede Trail near Denali National Park. It was originally one of a few buses used by the Yutan Construction Company to provide remote accommodations for the construction crew from Fairbanks that worked on road upgrades in 1960–1961. The bus engine was removed and it was instead towed by Caterpillar D8 bulldozers. It contained beds and a wood-burning stove, which still remain today. When the Stampede Mine ceased operations in the 1970s, all but this one bus were removed from the trail. Bus 142 had a broken rear axle, which caused the crew to leave it where it now serves as a backcountry shelter for hunters, trappers, and visitors."

As stated, it was there for construction workers and people since then used it as shelter.

Honestly I think that's a shame. I'd hoped that they'd leave the bus there.

Did a little reading up on it. In recent years, the bus had been shot up, the windows busted out, and the inside was ransacked pretty bad. Seems some folks just can't leave something as they found it.

Quite a few rescues while I lived up there, which are spendy given the location. Seems like a fatality every few years.

Guess that falls under the category of "Attractive Nusance"

Peaceful protesters seem to be everywhere.
