Looking at the Gen 4 or 5 guns. Does anybody have any experience with those guns? Wanted to stay around $1000. I heard that their Gen-3s had some problems. The last AK I owned was back in the 80s. Still have some mags that fit the SKS and should fit the PSA guns.

Hear good stuff about their 7.62x39 stuff but no hands on experience. Picked up a psak-105 with folding stock and it's been good shootin' with a variety of 5.45x39, including corrosive 7n6.

Buddy has a gf3, fit and finish is great and isn't over gassed. Magwell is kinda tight and would not fit bakes that a wasr was eating no problem. Not sure on the gf5 or gf4.

Tbh if you're spending that kind of money you might as well get a zpap. Imports hold their value. Domestic aks do not.

Go on YT and watch the folks from JMAC destroy some well know AKs....the PSA outlasted them ALL.

Watch a YouTube video from the Military Channel when they toured the PSA plant. They were very excited about the barrels they are making in house. i was looking at the Gen 5 with FN barrel and upgraded trigger.

Gen 5 is what they used on YT! Burned all the others down...

I have three PSA AK’s and they are wonderful! AK-P, AK74, and a GF5-E. I also had a Premium 103 side folder with the FN barrel, but ended up selling it earlier this year. I had my sights set on an M1a, and I regret selling it…

Out of these, I think the 74 is my favorite. When I purchased the 74, ammo was cheap, but now it’s hovering around $0.45/rd. It has minimal recoil, shoots flat, and follow up shots are really easy.

I’ve got around 3,000rds through my AKP with absolutely no issues. It eats anything and everything and doesn’t miss a lick. When I first got my GF5-E, it would not cycle properly. The face of the extractor had a sharp line where it transitions from flat to chamfered and wouldn’t jump over the lip of the fed round. Took me about 30 seconds with my dremel tool to give it a little chamfer and polish job, and it runs like a screaming demon now.

And was one of only two rifles to function in pt2 of Garandthumbs freezing rifle test and was the most functional.

Have a Gen 3 AKP that has been nothing short of outstanding. Reliable with all the cheap steel cased ammo I can find including rusty cases. It is more accurate that I expected. I picked it up used, and my daughter and I have shot for over 2 years at quite a few matches.
I understand that PSA had some issues early on, but they stand behind their products for lifetime.
My daughter has claimed this one, and I want to set up another AK for me. I am looking at the 104 pistol or one of the PSA AKs in 5.56mm that takes AR mags

If you have an interest in buying one even partially to collect, then I think the Zastava PAPs are hard to beat. If it's just a range gun - either one.

Has anyone had experience with their customer service regarding weapon issues? I’d really like to get a GF5 have they been quick in getting the rifles back to those who’ve had problems? The prices on these are great just don’t want to be left hanging forever if I gotta send it back for corrections

I've got a Zastava M92 that I absolutely love, but I would have absolutely no qualms with getting one of the PSA AKs as a second AK, now that I have a proper import AK on top of that. The PSA AKs have come a long way, and with the setting up of their own in-house tooling for making AKs they've most certainly become the only domestically produced AK I would bother with. I really want to get one of their GF5 AKs with the FN CL-CHF barrel and ALG triggers installed from the factory, once I've bought a few other higher-priority expensive things. A great rifle with great features at a decent price.

Yeah those factory upgrade models are catching my eye as well, really like some of those models with the JL rail for a non-typical AK. I don’t have an imported AK yet but I’m hoping in the next couple weeks I’ll be able to grab an M70 and I think I’ll jump on one of these PSAs by the end of the month. Just watched a YouTube video of their factory tour on the MAC channel and it seems they’re all in on making robust AKs, and Jakylls, despite some occasional QC issues a few years back (though the reddit hivemind holds a hell of a grudge still).

I really enjoyed the MAC video about touring the PSA production facilities myself. It was a good video. :) Yeah Reddit is a vengeful and begrudging place. Hard to get them to forgive.

But of all the US companies in the AK market, PSA has consistently admitted when it has shortcomings and worked to fix them, instead of denying or claiming other factors were at fault. All of the PSA AKs I've heard discussed by MAC, AKOU and other sources that I trust is that PSA has succeeded in their mission to bring an affordable AK to the US-produced commercial market to ensure that, even if the executive branch bans the importation of AKs, people will always have an option to buy a decent AK at a decent price. Which is a big undertaking tbh. The truth is it takes a lot of money to invest in the tooling for making AKs at a factory level, even moreso than the cost of AR tooling, and PSA invested the right capital to get the right machines to make the same receivers, trunnions, bolts, rivets, etc the right way. PSA ARs, meh I can take or leave, but PSA did everything in their power to do AK production correctly, and at least from what I can tell they've really succeeded in the past year or two. They've really listened to what the buyers want and delivered where it matters, here.

A few years ago, when they had just released their GF3 line, I had an extractor shear off on one of their earlier models. This particular one was a Liberty GB2. This model was the predecessor of the forged models and was made from billet trunnions. I purchased this rifle used on Armslist, so keep in mind that I was not the original owner.

I called up PSA CS, explained the issue, and was met with a no-questions asked “we will fix it” response. They sent me an RMA with a prepaid shipping label. I shipped the rifle in, they fixed it, returned it to me within a week, and sent me two magazines for my trouble.

My experience has been nothing but stellar!

I agree with you 100%. They have REALLY stepped their game up within the past few years. I think they are trying to fill a void in the market, and they’re trying to be one of the best. Especially on their Premium and GF5 lines with FN barrels, the attention to detail is awesome. I couldn’t be happier with the ones I have.

100%. I feel like the common phrase going around the Internet is true. PSA started out making decent inexpensive starter ARs so they could fund the money to be awesome at making great AKs and other in-house firearms. I would be quite happy running anything from the current GF3, GF4 or GF5 lines as long as I've got time to test it and ensure good QC (but I want that with everything I shoot, because to me the proof's in the shooting, not in the name). Your experience mentioned in your previous post is the hallmark of good customer service, and they sound like they've done you right, same as all the folks I know that have PSA AKs. PSA has really been knocking it out of the park lately with their production line, and I have to admit they've come a long way. Between their AKs, the JAKL, the Dagger and the Rock, they've really come into their own for answering demand in those sectors of the market.

In the last few years, I have come to the conclusion that most crap on Reddit is people repeating what they have heard or read without any first hand knowledge. I would go a step further and say that most of them if they even own an AK it sits in the closet or safe and only sees the light of day a few times a year. The same goes for a lot of forums and pages - people like to gossip.

bought my son the gf3 model for Christmas, went out the back door and sqeezed off a few rounds now i want one.
steel cased ammo like everything else is crazy
Well that was nice of you. :D I hope he enjoys it. You should totally get one so you two can shoot together.

This is your fault. Or my wife's. Probably both.

Went to psa. Guy had my license and everything. But I hesitated and needed to meet the rest of the family for dinner so I backed out in case the bg check took a while....

Get to the restaurant and tell the wife I almost bought an ak. She says "oh, you should have, I was thinking just the other day we don't have one yet"😱🥰

Went back the next morning and this "blem" gf3 and open box Magpul furniture came home with me...

I thought the dog furniture was really cheap feeling but for $600 I was in. Plus dude mentioned the open box Magpul.

Haven't even shot it yet and I already want the gf5 with wood, fn barrel and alg. That's really my only complaint. The trigger (which measures 4.5lbs) is just long and then releases, no real "stop" before it breaks. But I tried one with the alg and it was much less travel, if still not an AR style "stage before the break".

I Love Your Wife!!!!!

I Love Your Wife!!!!!
Me too! But I'm convinced it's a scheme of some sort. Mostly that SHE wants an ak. Especially since the Magpul stuff was plum colored.

She claims about a 1/4 of stuff I buy as hers😆. Only .308+ size and center-fire revolvers are safe. She has even tried to claim my Rossi .357 lever I picked up not to long ago.

She loves my AR in 7.62x39 already so we will do a head to head matchup when I get to the range. I presume I should start saving my sheckles for another ak🙃

Here is the Gen 5 in Bakelite finish. Got a 1000 rounds coming in. Should be here this week.

Great looking gun! And here’s another thing I noticed about your pics and that is a plus for PSA, in my book. Their guns are placed / shipped in egg crate with a charging handle protector. I can’t tell you the number of times I have seen AKs in ultra crappy weak boxes with the charging handle stuck out of the box with damage. I know .. I know .. its the little things that make a difference for me.

I have not even shot the gun and thinking too hard about a folder.

ALG is an easy upgrade for the one you have

@CountrySide Gunsmithing has a GF5 waiting for me to pick up. After reading many reviews, I'm excited to get one.
You won’t regret it. I absolutely love mine.

Word of advice, if it doesn’t want to feed correctly at first, take a dremel and touch the extractor face where it chamfers. Mine was too flat and not allowing the round to slide by. Two-second polish job and it runs like a screaming demon. I’ll include some pictures of what I’m talking about when I get home from work today.

Nice, put some oil on it before taking it to the range. I have a small writeup on the 103 I just picked up. Basically a gf5 with a pretty gas block and front sight.
