Thinking of putting together an AR for a mid range shooter - SPR/DMR style rifle. 500 yards or so max. I dont have much room to shoot that far, so further doesnt make much sense either.

Paper, gongs/steel, maybe some hunting with it.

Thinking of 18" (typical stuff like free float, etc), but dont know if .223/5.56 or go to 6.5 or other option. I do not reload, so factory loads are going to be my go to. Barrel Im looking at is a WOA, Faxon maybe. Aero lower, unless I find some big bucks for a billet set, but that would also be better money for glass.

So, questions are:
.223 or 6.5G or other? For throwing downrange and possible hunting (NC, SC, VA sized animals)
WOA or other option for barrel? Length good or should I look at other lengths?
I do have a .30 cal can, using a 5/8x24 thread pitch, which I know most, if not all, .223 barrels are 1/2x28 (or whatever it is, the 1/2 thread)
Glass is going to be a LVPO in the 2-10 ish range, based on what I have had before. But definitely open to options here as well.

What would you build for this?

I love the SAM-R (it's 20"). It's what I used in the DM role. Perfect for out to 700 yards, even further. 18", even 16", is fine for that distance, though. 5.56/.223 is just fine. WOA, Faxon, Douglas, Shilen are all great brands. LVPO up to 8 or 10 is fine.

I think if I was going to do anything other than 223/556 it would be the new 6mmARC. I’m a sucker for new stuff lol. But seriously the 77 gr 223/556 stuff out of a quality 18” barrel will do just fine.

223 for a cheaper build/ammo......

6.5 grendel or 300 blackout otherwise...... I like the heavier bullets.

To the OP, I think any of those choices would work just fine for 500, although if you are considering hunting with it, I see no reason not to go with the Grendel or the new 6mm ARC.

I’ve got a 6.5 Grendel and really happy with it. I think it will meet your requirements with no problems. Now admittedly I’ve not researched the 6 ARC yet. Ammo cost is more relevant in context of how much you plan on shooting the rifle. While 6.5 Grendel cost more than 5.56 if you’re not shooting high volumes it’s not that bad. If you’re a high volume shooter, then you’ll want to reload the 6.5 Grendel. Can’t speak on the 6 ARC ammo prices. Accuracy is amazing with the 6.5 Grendel. Mine shoots the cheap wolf 100gr steel case ammo in 1 to 1 1/4 MOA and Hornaday Black 123gr ammo in the .50 to .75 MOA range depending if I’m doing my part or having a bad day. But in my book even a bad day at .75 MOA is pretty nice!

I had a 6.5G a while ago, and I really like the round. That's one reason it's high in the running. Accuracy, especially at distance, is great. Never really got to stretch it's legs, but would like to again.

This...^^^^

If you follow the US Army SDM rifle, or USMC SAM-R "recipe" , you should easily achieve the results you are after. On my stuff, I use 18" 1-8 Craddock Precision barrels and WC TTU-M2 Triggers.

ps .. .223 overall is not the best cartridge for deer hunting.

I know, everybody has an uncle that took a head shot at 695 yards and dropped them in the dirt.

But unless you are a great tracker, please pick another caliber.
