Springfield XD(m) is now available in 10mm. I love the XD(m) series. I've shot a 5.25" Competition model (same size as the 10mm) in 9mm in 3-gun for several years now. I carry an XD(m) for EDC.

When I fish or hunt, I usually carry a 5" S&W 629 (pre-lock, bead blasted matte finish). 6 shots & basically weighs more than my mother in law. It's a classic gun, shoots well and packs a whallop. But, I only drag it out a couple times a year.

I put, on average, a couple hundred rounds per month through my 9mm XD(m). So, the 10mm has advantages in capacity (for 2 legged varmints), familiarity, and carry-ability. The only thing - aside from aesthetics - I can see with the 629 is that you can mix snake shot, hardcast full power loads and powder puff stuff all in a single cylinder.

Just rambling at this point, but am seriously considering.

I carried a S&W 629 44 mag with a 6.5" (i think) barrel for years hunting. It never failed me. But, for about three years now I have carried instead of the 629, a Glock 20. I am no Glock fanboy by any means , but even with the higher capacity mags it still weighs about the same as the S&W with six shots. The 10mm is a hog killer just like the 44. Haven't killed a deer yet with the 10mm, but I just might.
But even with me having my " no love for Glock" relationship, personally I would still pick the Glock over the Springfield. Just whichever floats your boat.
10mm is not a bad choice.

There are some darn big hogs that I'd rather have a .44 for, but a good 10mm load will be lethal medicine for all deer in these parts.

I 2nd for glock 20. Best feeling glock ive shot.

I would still pick the Glock over the Springfield.

Every Glock I've shot, with the notable exception of a 21SF, seems to shoot about 27 foot high at 5 yards for me. I just can't adapt. XDs, on the other had, are like laser beams in my hand. (by that I mean I can sometimes hit what I intend to).

Glock is a different beast for sure if youre used to another platform.

To me ... as you point out wheel guns offer way more load flexibility especially for a hunting backup to me is the biggest plus. More rounds for the 10mm ... you got a long gun in your hands so you’re have a few rounds there to call on if needed. Weight ... when you add the weight of the 9 additional rounds of ammo you’re creeping up to having equal loaded weights for each. The real guestion is do you just want a semi-auto in a great caliber? Be honest and just go buy the XDm ... then you’ll have both! Damn it’s fun spending other people’s money!

I've considered picking up a 10mm Ruger SR1911 to replace (at least some of the time) the Blackhawk .45 Colt....

Similar thought process to yours... Weight and platform familiarity..

I too run the Glock 20 (not slim frame) for backup in the mountains of VA. We typically hunt in the mountains where we field dress the deer on the spot to make for easier transport. That also draws in black bear.

While I carry a Steyr Scout in .308 Winchester, the 10mm is strictly there for backup. I run Underwood ammo to ensure I get full strength 10mm. I also run 200gr. FMJ for penetration to break bone.

If you're still on the fence, the MOS model has a bit extra barrel length for additional speed, but I believe it is negligible and limits where I would want to carry the pistol. I can carry the 20 with a coat and still keep it concealed.

with the 629 is that you can mix snake shot, hardcast full power loads and powder puff stuff all in a single cylinder.

Are you taking advantage of that capability?

If you are then the wheel gun is your only choice here, unless you want to carry a snake gun and a 10mm.... then you know you get to buy more guns! :)

Speaking of... I get my Kenai Chest Holster this Thursday for my Glock 20.

10mm is a good all around round for 2 to 4 legged creatures.

i have a Glock 20SF and 3rd Gen S&W handguns and hi-point carbine. i love the S&W but the capacity of the glock is tough to beat (15+1 vs 9+1)

Just got an aero survival rifle that i’ll fit to match the glock which will be a kick ass woods combo just about anywhere.
