This guy is living it up

He’s at a care-free stage, but he’s one fall from the barn or one kick from the horse, or maybe even one parasite from drinking surface water away from losing it. It also feels like a game, he’s got some backstop that allows him to do this knowing that it isn’t really life and death. Seems like he’s basically at extended summer camp.

Oh, and I could save him $50/mo on his phone bill.

I did think about that too. If he got hurt, things could change quickly.

Now that he is on video, I am sure the gov has him on some list.
I’m sure that he was never undocumented, just doesn’t report income because he has so little, but that was just clickbait.

Said that he owned that 50 acres, if true he’s dicumented.

Yes, he's young and immortal. And your point is...?

Seriously, your concerns are legitimate, but he can avoid falling from the barn, being kicked by a horse, and drinking surface water. I have a bookshelf full of stories of others who have done what he is doing, in far more remote and rugged terrain, and lived a long life free of calamity.

Guess who don’t write books?
Dead people don’t write books.

When it works, it’s glorious. My grandfather lived a less “off grid” existence and about 1/3 of his siblings died young. The odds aren’t great. But again, when it comes together it sure seems glorious.

We are all just one -insert something- from losing it.

He nails the key point, no bills = no need for a paycheck.

It's interesting to set back and think about what steps one takes and how it weighs you down.

Most people don’t realize you can choose how heavy your chains are.

People live in prisons they build for themselves.

I wouldn't live his life, but I'm glad they haven't found a way to force him into a 1/4 acre neighborhood with vinyl siding and association dues.

What you've observed is an adult human male enjoying himself. A rare sight, I know, which explains your confusion.

...due to their off grid lifestyle?
broadly, lack of access to medical care. Injuries and illnesses. Don’t think anyone died from a waterborn parasite, and falling from a barn roof while debilitating was not often fatal. Not sure if passing out drunk in your buggy and getting hit by a train can be considered an “off grid” issue so won’t count that one.

Maybe, insufficient data.

So he trains horses and shoes horses for his few bills. When he wants. Good on him.

Downside, he won’t be young forever.

Yep, he‘s probably going to need to make some adjustments as he ages. Or he’s going to make them really quickly if he finds that women he wants.

He said his parents are a couple miles down the road.

He's not a fool for trying out something on a bare bones style. He has succeeded so far. For how long? nobody knows.

I'm sure there is some super hippy chick wanting this lifestyle. He went through a lot of pain and God led him back. That is a huge mountain to climb and good for him.

As others said, my only issue is his apathy towards safe drinking water. That shit can mess you up.

I saw this a few days ago and when I saw the thread title I figured it was about this very video.

First, I'm jealous of him. Not for living it, but having the knowledge and land to do it. Second, as others have said, his tax expense has me scratching my head. Third, everyone has mentioned getting injured. What in the heck do you think happened to all our relatives in ages past when that happened? It's a more dangerous life, plain and simple. However, he also lives in an Amish community and is a part of it, even if he's not actually Amish. What do they do when they get injured? I'm sure they have the knowledge to take care of him and his community would do so, just like our long gone relatives did.
