I picked up a Sig MPX 2 weeks ago, and so far it's a fun gun. But, being a product of the 80's and 90's, I have always had a want for the Berretta 92 and an MP5. I was out looking at what the local shops had in inventory, one of the local shop has a PTR clone for like $1600. Can anyone give a good comparison of the two?

I have owned both and still own the SP5K-PDW (MP5k style). They are both awesome firearms, I love the MPX with the last round bolt hold open and AR15 style controls. The MP5 style is a softer shooter and suppresses a lot better IMHO. To get the last round bolt hold open in an MP5 you have to have a 40S&W or 10mm. I know there are many great clones, but I would rather have the MPX than a bad clone of an MP5. But a good clone or a good HK version is my favorite sub gun made.

For historic value and fun range plinking I'd get an MP5. Product of that era myself.

For higher performance/competition I'd get the MPX.

I haven't shot an MPX but I have shot an original DEA9, and own a MP5SD. It's hard to argue with the form factor of the MP5; it just fits like a glove and shoots like a dream.

Having said that, I found the DEA9 to be the closest thing to an MP5 out of all of the subguns that I've shot over the years. Considering that the MPX is also built on an AR type platform, I'm thinking that it would be similar to the DEA9.

I don't think that you'd go wrong with either one.

I have both and they both serve a great purpose! Well MPX & AP5 (don't have MP5 money).

I have only shot and MP5 one time and only a magazine at that. For the money......... I will keep the MPX. Less expensive, more availability of all kinds of things related to it and all the mags you can afford are currently on the market. For the torture we have put these things through, I find it hard to believe any other gun would perform much better. The MPX has been rock solid even when suppressed. It is only limited by my, ever inept, skill set.

Only thing that hurts me is those MPX mags are more expensive than AP5 mags but the good thing is a binary works better in a AP5/MP5! Sticking with the Timney in the MPX

Full disclosure: The MPX is really neat however I'm an HK fan and about to buy my 4th MP5 type gun. My situation is different than most since I have a FA pack as does a close friend plus another friend who is an FFL/SOT and has multiple FA postie packs so range time is fun time when we manage to get together.

I've shot the MPX suppressed and enjoyed it but it was only a couple of mags not an all day wring it out sorta thing, no postie MPX yet and I doubt my bud will ever build one.

Buddy #1 owns a PTR but hasn't even shot it given all his other hosts. In playing with a PTR at a LGS all the German furniture off one of my guns fit nicely. The FA pack mated up and the carrier tripped the sear while dry firing & cycling. It would appear that a PTR is ready to go out of the box as a FA host but I have not actually shot one to confirm.

Now lets shake things up and add in the MKE that Century is importing. These are available for the same price point as the PTR line at Atlantic Firearms. I own an older full size ATI imported gun and it has been a stellar host that gets packed for every range trip. Out of the box they aren't FA ready but that doesn't matter to most folks. The gun I'm considering is an old ATI imported MKE K model, again all the German furniture fits properly and the gun just works. Remember these are built with tooling licensed by HK in Germany.

It truly is a great time to get into the HK MP5 world with German guns available along side the MKE & PTR clones.
