So I've never owned a safe. Want a quality safe to store my guns. I plan to put it in my basement. Its finished and dry. Plan to bolt it to the floor and have it in a corner to make it harded to get leverage with a pry bar. Looking at the Fat Boy or Fat Boy Jr. Anybody have one of those? I know gun safes never hold what they say they will hold. I have mostly long guns and a few handguns.

In for interest.

Taltons Safes are a Liberty dealer, and before everyone says "get a Drake", they are right up the road from me and the convenience to purchase and have it delivered get my attention.

I have a Liberty.
Bought it from Taltons.
It’s great, and comes with a fantastic warranty.

The evidence in quality of obvious, as I had only owned cheap safes prior.

But Taltons wanted $300 to deliver it.

He is a professional safe mover and was much better priced, especially if you are military or LEO

I wonder if that was due to distance to Durham from south Raleigh/Garner. I'm literally five miles up the hiway from them.

Guess I can just stop in and ask.

I liked what I saw when I looked at liberty safes. I think they are the second best safe you can buy in this area, behind a Drake! And Drake delivers too. I know that for the money I had budgeted, the drake had twice the steel thickness. That said, there is nothing wrong with a fat boy safe.

I have a Liberty 24 gun, got it super cheap, and am happy with it. However, I understand it’s not the heaviest built safe out there, not the most fire resistant, not the toughest to break into, but Liberty’s are well priced, widely available and will serve their purpose for 98% of buyers IMO.

I bought my Liberty from Talton as well. Good small, locally owned company, fair price on the safe itself and pleasant sales staff, but I too believe their delivery service is far from competitive in price. Get a quote for yourself, but definitely recommend you look around for other delivery options as well.

Good info! Not too familiar with the Drake brand. Saw it mentioned here and looked it up. A good ways from me being in W-S. I plan to check out the Liberty Safe store in Clemmons I just found out about yesterday as I live 15 minutes from it. For what I'm looking for, main thing is safe storage. To keep kids away even though both of my kids (9 and 13) shoot with me regular and are quite familiar. Their friends that come over, not so much. Also protection from the average burglar. I have a home alarm system, so hopefully even somebody that knows what they are doing won't have time to bust it before a law enforcement response. For fire rating, seems most I have looked at have a 60-90 minute rating. I ha e a FD 4 minutes from my house, so those ratings should be ample.

I’m in High Point and Drake delivered here somI doubt W-S would be an issue.
For the size, a Drake will weigh about 2x as much. The difference is the amount of steel and fire board. There was a post over on CFF from someone who may be a member here but I forget who, lost his house in a fire. Complete burn to ash fire. The stuff in the Drake pretty much survived. I think some plastic melted and papers browned but the guns were salvageable.

I wouldn't buy from these folks but this page explains a few things related to safe ratings- just to help set expectations for what a safe can and cannot do.
Nearly all gun safes are RSC or lower rated ( look for the UL sticker) which means 5 minutes to break into with common hand tools, hammers, prybars, etc.
5 minutes to breach- of course they test a lot of them and know what they are doing, etc. No UL stickers on a lot of the cheap imported ones.

The best safe is the one that no one knows you have and that no one can find. I'm always amazed when guys say they put them in their garage !

I've had my Liberty for over 20 years and couldn't be happier with it! If I ever feel the need for another safe it will be a Liberty.

Other that a false wall, how would you go about hiding a large safe? I'm thinking maybe a couple chairs or something beside it and maybe a few small items on top to break up the shape.....cover it all with a large blanket. Maybe it would look like a pile of furniture and boxes stored over in the corner. This would likely only be done for those times like vacation where I'm gone for several days.

One of the reasons I have multiple small safes. My expectation is the BG's would still be trying to find them when the deputy shows up. ;)

Some ideas for keeping a safe out of site. Put it in a closet. Build a closet or cabinet around it. Put it under stairs.

Ive owned a Liberty 18 long gun safe for a long long time. I clean ed up my garage and reloading room yesterday and stuffed 18 rifles and shotties in it possibly for the first time. Great safe for the money. Its not perfect but none are in my opinion. Id rather have more capacity than more security. Safe(s) with a "lazy susan" would be ideal but you give up capacity for accessibility.

There's a Liberty safe dealer here in Kernersville, at the Walkertown edge. Maybe go take a look?

Liberty Safe of Kernersville, 2020 West Mountain St. They used to be a custom gunsmith but seems like they recently dropped that and switched to just selling safes.

Google still thinks it's West Mountain Trading.

My Dad, brother and I all have liberty safes. Dad and I have the models with the solid door and my brother has the laminate door. My brother bought his from Talton's and his house in Fuquay was broken into several times. The last time it happened they took a pick axe (which he had hidden in the house so it couldn't be used as a tool to break into the house) to the gun safe. It damaged the door pretty badly and I don't know how much time he had but they still couldn't get into it. When he got home he then couldn't open it but thanks I think to Liberty's warranty, Talton's came out and opened it and brought him a replacement for free.

While I'm sure there are better safes, using this as an example I think Liberty will do the job. At least at delaying someone and giving them more chance of being discovered in the act.

I'll give another shout out to Talton's. They did right by my wife's church. Took a 100yr old safe that was useless in trade for one they could use and that was purpose built for what they needed to do with it. They were very patient and accommodating with a group of people who do everything by committee. More patience than I have.

Does Talton's have a website?

He's been around for many years. He likes to collect rare, very interesting safes, and has some great tales about break ins, divorce safe abuse, and tear gas breeches in homes. One of his kits stores glass vials behind the lock in case someone tries to drill and hammer their way in. Very rough surprise in a confined area, and the results don't make a wife happy about her home

I don't think you will be dissapointed with a Liberty.
I bought a blemished Cabelas branded Liberty, the equivalent of a Colonial 23, for less than half-price because of some scuffs and a skint up corner.
It's sold as a 25-gun safe. NO way on earth would it hold 25 guns, and you be able to reach in and pull out the gun you wanted,
without having to move others first. But you already know that.
I would just suggest getting a larger safe than what you think you need, whichever brand you choose.
Liberty has a sale going on right now too!

Had this delivered by Talton’s today. It’s a big mother, they did a great job. Recommend them highly.
I guess now that we've just figured out we'll be neighbors soon, sharing the same fire hydrant, I'll get a Liberty too, in case both our houses are on fire or being robbed at the same time. :D

You’re welcome to come see mine anytime.

I've got a Fat Boy Jr. from Talton's. I haven't managed to fill out up, but my collection consists of Glocks and opticless ARs.

Fatboy Jr. is a pretty good deal on a fairly large security container. Not a bad choice overall if in a diff part of the nation.

Given that Roxboro is not too far from most of NC, I'd buy a Drake over a Liberty for sure. Much better quality steel and better made.

Swing by the shop in Roxboro and take a look for yourself to see how they're made and the quality of steel they use.

I own a Drake now and although Liberty wasn't bad for a common commercially available container, it's not in the same league as the stuff coming out of the Roxboro shop.

This isn't a "buy local" issue, it's a difference in quality issue.

Is that the Franklin 50? That looks similar to my Colonial 30 but BIGGER. I know the Franklin is a step up on the capacity and fire rating. Talton's delivered my Colonial to Willow Spring a few years ago. I'll have them relocate it to Duncan in the next few weeks.

Duncan town adjacent to Fuquay? We just moved from there a couple years ago.

Have a liberty 50 and browning.

Browning is higher quality but the Liberty is much bigger for the same price.
