I was playing around on the internet. One thing led to another and I ended up on this Wikipedia page which lists, in great detail, the 20 longest confirmed kill shots in modern history.

We all know about Chris Kyle (he's on the list) and the Canadian sniper who currently has the longest confirmed kill shot (he's on the list)...

But, the amazing thing is: Near the bottom of the list is all the info about a Confederate Soldier from South Carolina who has a confirmed kill, in the Civil War, with a muzzle loader, from 1390 yards! I thought that was fantastic and wanted to share with everyone who might not know.

There's also info on an American Buffalo Hunter, who, during the American Indian Wars, took out an enemy combatant from 1500 yards with a Sharps 50-90 cartridge fed rifle.

Here's the page with the list:

I’m envisioning a shot into a wall of soldiers marching across an open field. Much lower degree of precision and therefore less impressive than today’s shots. Still impressive that they could even get the elevation/holdover right at that distance with no kestrel, range finder, or fancy scope, though!

Edit - i didn't even need to click the original link to know this is the sort of thing they were talking about, right down to the rifle type.

thats because all that "stuff" is a enabler for the less skilled, and a backup plan for talent.
