I received a call last week from the dealership I purchased my 19 Tacoma from, asking if I was interested in upgrading. I went in today, talked with a saleman, they offered me 4K over what I paid for the truck new. It looks like I will be upgrading to 22 Tacoma right before Christmas.

I've heard a lot about this demand for used trucks & I also have an (Older) Tacoma.

But isn't there also a huge demand for NEW trucks?
The problem with new vehicles is people want to customize what they get or they are set on specific features/options/color etc and they don't want to wait for special order.

I had the same thing happen when I was looking for my track car. I could have bought a 2019 with 20k miles for the same price that I could get a new 21 brand new from Germany. Mind you it took 5 months to get.

My wife looked at me Friday night and said," before I make your truck payment let's see what it's worth."
I had a basically barebones 4x4 19 Frontier king cab. Carvana offered 3k more than paid. So Saturday we went to the Nissan dealership. I came out with a 2022 Frontier 4 door SR 4x4 loaded out with extras and they came off MSRP so I really got my 3k extra. Most places are adding to the msrp all without adding a penny to my payment.
This truck is seriously nice compared to my other truck.plus I'm getting 22mpg compared to 16ish.

The dealership only had two 4x4 trucks on the lot one a Titan. It looked like they only had about 15 New vehicles total. It was so bad they didn't even have a new car in the show room.

Tacoma’s have been selling for crazy prices for the past 1.5yr. It’s the main reason I pulled the trigger on selling my 18 Tacoma. I sold it for $2k less than I paid. Had I held on to it, I would’ve made at least $5k, but I was tired of driving that thing.

And this issue is Toyota specific, it’s every dealer. New car production is down, money is still very cheap, so demand is steadily outpacing supply. Used vehicles are selling for seemingly crazy numbers, dealers will buy almost anything, and new vehicles are not only not being discounted but are being marked up.

In most cases, it doesn’t make sense to sell a perfectly good vehicle only to buy a new and/or more expensive one right now. I purposely went to a less expensive vehicle after selling my Tacoma but the differences are even greater now, a year later.

I'm getting a 22 TRD offroad, Out the Door for MSRP, minus the equity of 12K for my truck. Even paying the higher price, I'm still making out. I will not have to make December's truck payment.

Every time I drop a car off for service I get a call from someone at the dealership wanting me to trade.

I could make $10K or more over what I paid for my Land Cruiser, and I've put 25,000 miles on it in the last 18 months since buying it. I just ain't dropping $90K on the outgoing model and Ford won't release the damn Raptor R fast enough!

On a side note, I noticed a commercial on TV the other day that was offering a guarantee trade for your value on your car once the new one you order comes in. The days of a bunch of new cars on the lot may be gone. Lot cheaper on them,, they don’t have to pay “rent” to the manufacturer while they are on the lot.

I’ve been through so many vehicles in my life that I don’t get attached any more. 4+ K flip, anything’s gone. Something I’ve learned over the years is there’s always something else.

Wonder what I could get for a 91 suburban with 120k miles? 🤣

No, Manuals are very much sought after by enthusiasts! It’s tough to buy them new and owners rarely want to give them up.
From what I understand Toyota does not make manual Tacomas to simply put on the lot anymore. They are only special order. Which is why I had to hunt a used one down.

The amount of people wanting manuals is far less than those seeking autos.

Yup, special order only so the only way a dealer will have one on the lot is if someone bails on their order. People are impatient so some settle for auto if it’s on the lot or local.

Many enthusiasts realize that the autos suck and practically require a tune ($$) to make them drive like a normal truck should. So while the demand is definitely lower for manuals, there are those who are dead set on a manual and will pay for it. This is apparent in some of the fb Tacoma groups. If you sell, try there before a dealer IMO.

I wanted to get my wife a new 4Runner but I’ll be damned if I’m spending that much on what’s on the lot. I have a specific set of features I want and that’s what she will get. I came close but no car payment is nice.

I decided to wait until mid next year and see what happens.

I really just want my highly modified money pit 94 extra back on the road/trails. Luckily that’s just time since all the expensive pieces here. Some assembly required. But it is a manual transmission and has three shifters for the transfer cases. 🤣

Yup. The auto transmissions are dog shit. That’s why everyone cries on tacomaworld about their “underpowered” 3rd gen. Manual transmission always.

They tried me on my 2003 Tundra..

I have a 2007 Tacoma 4x4 double cab with about 217K miles and debated trading it a few times; but it just goes and goes and rides great. I did upgrade the stereo and speakers a few months ago so I could connect my phone.

HUGE!!!!! Most are presold that are coming in.
Mind you it took 5 months to get.
Me too. and only for a lowly GT Mustang...5 months.
Something I’ve learned over the years is there’s always something else.
Brother ain't That the truth??

Last December @RS went to Huntersville Ford and bought a anew F-150. In October [?] of this year the local Ford dealer wrote her a check for $5K more than she paid. She bought a new King Ranch Explorer. She can make money on it Today.
I ordered 2 F-150s in a year and got them both in 5 weeks 2017-2018...Just ordered a new Ford Maverick Pick Up and was told that if all the planets aligned perfectly...it would be here Late April 2022.

One of the car books that come here had an interview with the head folks at each U.S. mfg. All said the same ....never again will there be Incentives or discounts. Never again will lots be Full of New vehicles. They All had a better "net" in 2020 over 2019. Less labor, less part inventory, No sticker discounts and no low interest loans. No need for either. My vehicle buying has changed....For The Better...now if I can just get a handle on being Patient!!!

You haven't had a proper experience, and for that, I'm glad.

As of 2019 I think it was, less than 3% of all new cars sold in the US were manual. As of like 3 years ago or so, Audi doesn't even offer a single model in the US with a manual transmission. Tragic that this is the way things are going.

Unfortunately, the big 3 fools in suits said the same thing about no rebates, nothing off sticker, yada yada, years ago. Ultimately, greed overcame one of them every time. In the end, they will all cave.
Can’t make any money selling off-brand used cars and trucks, after you paid too much to pick them up and rehab each one. You can lie and say you can, but the bankers won’t hesitate to stick the knife in deep as it’ll go.
Cadillac dealer said that his Service department is keeping the light on. He just hopes the folks don’t quit. Good luck finding a quality replacement 😪

There's no point in buying right now unless the dealers are willing to overpay for what you've got. I'm waiting until this market stabilizes a little bit more. No point in buying a new sports car for 10k more than what they were on the used market...last year

Cox Toyota called me and asked if i was willing to sell my 19 avalon. I asked what he had for me to upgrade to and he said "well we were actually only interested in buying yours because we only have 12 cars on the lot." That's new and used combined. I told him it was my only car and obviously wouldn't work. He understood and said "yes It's a strange time when i, the sales manager, is calling to buy and not sell." Strange times indeed.

I’ve had the Jeep dealer that I bought my last 2 Wranglers from call and offer to buy my Jeep back at a profit to me. But replacement is nonexistent! And super high when you find one!

My wife wanted a Mazda CX-5 with a manual transmission, but it would have had to be special order. I couldn’t find any that weren’t automatic anywhere in online in inventory. Our cars were / are a 2006 4Runner with about 170k miles and a 2009 Scion XD with 340k. They need replacing.

I’ve got a WRX on order, that is manual. She’s jealous. It is scheduled to come in this month. Probably Merry Christmas to me.

One thing about ordering, you can get the options you want, not what someone else decided to put together to target a price point or demographic.

Lexus is no better. Awhile back I was thinking of trading my 2019 in they offered me $27,000, but we couldn't come to a deal. Last month when I brought it in for service the used car manager offered me $32,586 on the spot, and I wasn't even looking for a car. Yesterday I got an email offering me $35.586 for it from the used car manager. I can't even see how they are going to make any money since the new ones I believe start in the low 40's. They are making it very tempting but the only thing stopping me is they only have cars in transit at this time with almost nothing on the lot.
