Michael Seth Marsh was shot and killed as he was hunting coyotes with an electronic call on Monday evening. A local heard what he thought was coyotes and grabbed his rifle. He said he saw what he thought was a coyote that had something treed and fired twice. Seth stood up and hollered to stop shooting that he had been hit. Because of foggy conditions they couldn't land a helicopter to life flight him out. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Seth didn't have an orange vest on but was wearing an orange hat.

I worked with Seth and he was a great guy. Always a smile on his face and laugh in his heart. Around the same time he came to work with us Seth entered into the ministry taking Russell Gap Baptist Church in Taylorsville to Pastor. He is survived by his wife and two young children.

My wife went to school with him and knew his family. I know I won’t hear the end of it when I go hunting from now on.

It’s a crappy thing all around

I have always told people and my older brother when I went on my first hunt, I will kick someone ass if I spent 12 months in a combat zone and come back unharmed just to get shot by a dumbass not paying attention while I am out deer hunting.

I have never and will never understand people that shoot at something without knowing 150% what they are aiming at and even what MAY be behind it.
I hunt turkey and you always hear of someone shooting any thing red or moving in the woods during turkey season and because everyone is on the ground people get shot. I have never even come close to pointing a gun at anything that wasn't a turkey during season and I like to hope that I have enough sense not to.

Sad story...

This is the problem, the shooter 'thought'. You need to be 100% on target, otherwise you do not have the shot.
"He said he saw what he thought was a coyote that had something treed and fired twice."
I haven't been hunting before (but would love to learn, I'm quite fond of the way deer taste), but I just cannot fathom shooting at something without being 100% certain of what I'm aiming at. I have the same thoughts every time I hear about a hunting "accident."

Investigators say Marsh did have a hunting license but they do not believe the shooter did. They are still looking into that but say to shoot at coyotes in North Carolina, a hunting license is required.

They do believe what happened was an accident but say it does not mean charges would not be filed. The District Attorney will make the final decision."

No, this is not an accident, this is manslaughter. Lock his ass up, and ban him from owning guns for the rest of his life. He makes the rest of us look bad.

showing up on Fox news:

Using it to further harass the AR-15:

Marsh, who served as the pastor of Russell Gap Baptist Church, was shot several times in the chest with an AR-15 by a man who told police he heard coyotes screaming nearby and believed the animals had trapped something in a tree.

Shannon Watts - gofund me for his memorial : https://www.gofundme.com/profile/shannon-watts-nccrn

Recon this is Shannon Watts of "moms Demand Action"?????

No, different Shannon Watts. She is local.

My understanding is they knew each other and the deceased had permission to hunt on the land. Not sure if this is correct but a friend of the family said it was a spray and pray series of shots. This follows another incident in Burke County where a duck hunter was returning to a truck when a deer hunter shot him and he died. Never heard what the charges were.

I was home for Memorial Day 2006 (keep in mind this was an extremely rough time in Iraq) and was picking up shotgun shells off the ground during a skeet shoot with my future in-laws. One of the younger cousins walked up with a 12ga at the low ready and let one off right by my head. Dirt and grass flew up in my face and I hear him saying something about “..the safety...the safety..!” I took the shotgun from him and racked the shells out and set it on the ground and let his dad deal with him

That is terrible.

I've shot my share of coyotes over the years. I've let a few more walk (or run I suppose) because I was taking that extra few seconds to verify that it actually was a coyote and not someone's dog running free. I can't imagine mistaking a human for a coyote.

Sad part is, all they seem to be concerned with is the fact he had no license.
Was he on his own property? Was the coyote chaser trespassing?

Mr Marsh had permission to hunt on the property and it wasn't owned by Mr Dunn, who has now been charged with Involuntary Manslaughter.
Bad stuff all the way around.

Does the second say anything about IQ tests.
Some people are too dumb to own guns.

Even if he doesn’t get prison he will be marked as a felon in a plea deal. He will never legally touch a gun again. I doubt he goes without a record that will haunt him the rest of his life to include the mental scar he will face daily. It was pure dumb and regardless he is going to have a remaining life of hardship.

I feel for the young family of the deceased. Kids will never have biological father again and the wife will endure pain for sometime. Hopefully family will step in and fill some of that void. Prayers for the long recovery for those close to the deceased and the family.

Yesterday I was told the man who shot the hunter was training to be a highway patrolman or had been accepted for the academy. Can anyone confirm that?

Good thing he hadn't finished his training or they'd have found some way to frame the deceased for his own shooting.

I knew the dude that shot the good pastor.

With his background I’m would be surprise if they even gave him a chance to move along any part of the application process

I’ve been hearing that he may have tried to confront Marsh in the past. Marsh was a fine young man, a good Christian, and serving as a Pastor but stood firmly on his principles and beliefs. It makes one wonder if this was more than a case of mistaken identity and maybe the shot wasn’t quite accidental. I sincerely hope not.

Thanks. A lady at an eatery in Alexander County was telling that story. She said it came from him.

I heard today that the shots were at 50yds, with a scoped rifle. Of course, "scoped" could mean unmagnified red-dot. But 50yds? Haven't confirmed this, however.

Very sad for young Reverend Marsh's family.

I was in a Wilkeboro hunting club a short time and my friend assigned me to disputes. Two guys were arguing about infringement on spacing between treestands which was no less than 400 yards.

I asked them how one guy knew it was too close and he said while he was hunting he was ranging him with his scope. Loaded gun of course. Rednecks for sure.

I’ve been looking for a kevlar vest for hunting and motorcycle riding. Thinking I need to act quicker.
