May be traveling to son's graduation from ABOLC (Armor Basic Officer Leaders Course) - or, for that matter, subsequent follow-on or eventual PCSs. For now, at least, no unfriendly states to traverse.

Has anyone found a particular hotel chain willing to place personal firearms into a safe for subsequent retrieval since, as I understand, taking one's carry weapon onto base or other federal property is strictly verboten even with a CHP or equivalent? Failing, that, has anyone an anecdote as to what they have done in similar circumstance (e.g. just leave it at home or ... ?)

Check with the Provost Marshall for that base, look into the Base Order regarding transportation of firearms. When I went Ft. Knox a couple years ago, I was given a written (emailed) statement from PMO stating I could transport the weapon on the base as long as it was unloaded, and locked separately from the ammunition- along with the base order citing it.

Yes, it's anecdotal, but still an avenue worth looking into.

Also, most online Hotel booking sites have the filter for amenities, and you can select "in-room safe."

I used to be a member of the rod and gun club at mckellars lodge on fort Bragg. Firearms must be registered with the pmo's office.
Firearms and ammunition must be transported in two compartments in the vehicle. For example, gun in trunk, ammo in passenger area.
Getting a pass onto post is not difficult, but you are also subject to random searches.
All that being said, a friend that was an E-7 mp on post told me that transporting weapons was only ok if you are going directly to the range. No stops in between.
I don't even bother going on post anymore.
I guess my point is don't put yourself in a position where some E-3 (or whatever) with a hair across his arse can get you jammed up on a weapons charge on a federal reservation.
