Growing near Morehead planetarium.
The brain looking thing is not a fungus.
It's either a fruit or nut that grows on the tree. The storm caused a bunch of them to fall off.
They look like brains.

Yup, Osage orange (aka bois’d’arc). It’s about the most rot resistant species that grows domestically. Hard to find large straight logs though. It usused to be planted a lot along fence lines to serve as a hedge.

No thorns on it.
Was it just planted in tight rows?

I may grab a few brains to attempt a 5 gallon bucket planting.

You sure about no thorns? We use it as hedge between fields. Can’t drive a truck in the area as the thorns on down branches will puncture the tires, tractor does well.

Definitely has thorns. Seasoned properly it is harder than 'Chinese Arithmetic' !!! More rot resistant than locust or cedar. Makes great firewood (extremely high BTU )but logs need to be cut green. Seasoned wood will eat up a chain in short order. Very "twisty" grain yet great for bow staves. Wood color tends to be a nasty yellow.

Wiki says that a thornless variety is often planted for ornamental reasons.
I bet this tree is that type.
