My wife turns 65 soon and we are trying to figure out how all this works.

My wife is not eligible to receive SS payments because she did not work enough.

Questions: 1. Do we have to have her enroll in both Medicare part A and B to keep Tricare?

2. Can she just enroll in part A and keep Tricare.

We have tried calling different Tricare people, but keep getting transferred to different people. We do have a call into the local base to see if they still have a Tricare rep there, but of course we go a recording that everyone was at lunch. Will try again later.

Thanks for your help

It is my understanding that you have to have both, part A and part B to keep Tricare.

There are certain conditions in which that's not the case, but those things are pretty rare.

You must have part B, Tricare or not if you don't have coverage from some other source. Tricare requires part B for coverage.

It has been a challenge to figure all this out. Wife is not eligible for part A and it is also my understanding that we just have to have part B (which is 135/month). I believe we do need to bring a copy of her part A denial letter (when she gets it) with us when she gets her new ID so that can be entered into DEERs also along with her part B approval.

If someone know different please let me know. The more I talked with SS the more confused I got.

Wow! Just got home after a face to face meeting with the SSA. Man did my wife get shafted a few years ago. Turns out she could of been getting a SS check for the past three years based off of my Social Security. She did a face to face back when she turned 62 also and was turned down. She is looking for that letter as I type this. The young lady that helped us today said she is was definitely eligible and should of received it. She even had her boss come over and confirm everything with us. She will start receiving a check in Nov. and the part B (which we all pay for) will be deducted from that. So that is all good. The supervisor told us to find that letter and bring it in so they can make a copy. They did not see it in their system. She said she does not think we will get any back pay or anything, but it does not hurt to try. She (supervisor) said she will file that claim personally.

Should have a formal letter within the next few weeks. We were given copies of every thing that was done today and also even mentions the conversation about her past experience.

Wife just found the letter. Back to SS. Glad it is close.

GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks. We are not holding our breath. Even the supervisor said it would be a long shot. But at least she will start receiving benefits in November.

I met a retired military doctor at the Y.
Her was forced, due to his age, off of tricare and onto Medicare.
That's when he started getting royally screwed by age limits for treatments.
He was denied access to a newer less invasive procedure for joint replacement that had less than have the recovery time if the older methods. The denial was based entirely on his age, not the cost difference.

Yeah, I can’t wait. My wife has been researching Tricare and Medicare and has come to the same conclusion. You have to have Part B. The VA has been pushing me to apply for my SS early and I keep telling them no. I’m 60 in 6 months and will apply for mine at 62.

We have Tricare for Life and Medicare. Yes you have to pay for part B. Yea, @Hammer21b No way take it before 62 if you do not need to. It sounds like you know you would be screwing yourself if you did.
