I started prepping to modify my 'away from home' load out by adding a "truck gun", and discovered that I had way more questions than I had answers. And so, I bring them all to you, oh knowledgable ones!

Now, when I say "truck gun", I am not limiting either term strictly. I am referring to a firearm which you have in your vehicle when you are away from home - whatever that firearm or vehicle may actually be.
  1. Do you keep it in your vehicle at all times?
  2. Do you take any special physical security measures to protect it from theft?
  3. Do you take any special security measures to protect yourself from law enforcement hassles?
  4. Do you alter your maintenance of it for environmental reasons?
  5. Do you alter your ammunition load out due to its planned use?
  6. How much ammunition do you carry with it?
  7. Do you carry any special maintenance items or consumables for it in your vehicle?
Thanks! Any additional input will be appreciated. I know that some of you will be reluctant to go into much detail, and I thoroughly understand.

My normal routine is not really a truck gun, but here’s what I do:

1. No
2. I take it when I leave the vehicle
3. No. Just obey the law
4. No
5. No
6. 3 mags for handguns, 3 for rifles. Carry extra unloaded for road trips. Usually about 50 rounds of handgun,300 for 22LR and a an extra couple loaded mags for rifle. Have a buddy that usually brings a case of 5.56 when we hit the mountains.
7. Bore snakes, CLP and lube for emergencies. Have a few rifle and gun multi tools too.

Might not be the best plan, but that’s where I’m at.

My truck gun is a PSA AR15. Nothing to $$. As I am constantly traveling to jobsites all over North Carolina and South Carolina I have two different types of get home bags. One I carry if I can walk home within 24 hours. If I’m driving farther than that then I carry a large bag of a lot more gear. But the truck gun is the same,

my philosophy for the truck gun is it there for civil unrest, natural disasters that kind of thing. Every day personal defense I have a Glock 17. The truck gun would come out of the bag if there was an EMP and I had to walk home. Something along those lines. There’s a lot of people who give me grief about it, But I look at it like this, it’s better to have it and never need it, then to need it and not have it. What’s the difference of it sitting in my truck or sitting in my safe at home? On the very slight chance I would ever need it I would have it and that Great peace of mind.

Answers lol

1. No, take it in the house every night. During the day I work out of my truck so it’s really not out of sight, when I have to go inside it’s locked in a steel box.
2. steel lock box.
3. nope, they don’t need to know about it so mums the word. Everything is legal.
4. RemOil gun wipes during the most humid pRts of the summer. In the winter here in NC it doesn’t get cold enough to worry about your oil thickening up inside your action. So I stick with CLP or remOil.
5. Steel core green tips.
6. 8 30 round mags in a over the shoulder bandolier type bag
7. Standard milspec issue cleaning kit and a 2 0zs squeeze bottle of oil.

1. Yes, but when I get home, I bring it in and put it beside the bed.

2. Yes. It is concealed in a camp chair bag and also well hidden in the vehicle.

3. Not really. Although I keep it concealed and hidden, it is not readily accessible to me while I’m in the driver’s seat.

4. No

5&6. Reloads: 75gr Speer GDSP - 4 magazines - 120 rounds

7. Yes. OTIS kit for maintenance. Spare parts: extractor assembly, extractor pin, firing pin, firing pin retainer, FCG w/springs and pins, spare battery for RDS and light. I also have a cleaning rod (3 pc) shock-corded to the rail.

AR15 pistol, 6” 5.7 w/ Form 1 silencer, 201 rounds

Hidden in vehicle, taken inside the house when I come home

I have an exact duplicate of my carry gun in a cabled gun lock box in my truck. When I take my car I move it from one to the other. Same with wife's van. We have three of the cabled boxes one for each vehicle.

My get home bag has a kydex holster for that gun velcroed inside.

So that's the backup handgun.

When I travel overnight or any real distance from home and AR pistol (either .300 or 5.56 ) goes with. It's in a semi non descript bag that actually fits in the bottom of my suitcase. So if I'm checking into a hotel none are the wiser.

Legally every one of those guns is a handgun and covered by my NC CHP. If I travel out of state I adjust as needed legally.

Unfortunately the majority of the time, I can’t have even a pistol on me let alone a “truck gun” since I work in MD and on a military base on top of that, but when I do have something on me beside my CC gun I have a Eberelstock pack that holds my .300BLK pistol and a few extra mags in it so I just toss that in the truck.

Have not built my truck gun yet. But my plans AR pistol likely in 300blk for ballistic performance.

would have a protocol in place for taking it because the annoyance will otherwise lead to complacency and then never have it. I think “30 miles or more” will be trigger (pun intended) my bringing truck gun. 3 mags.

plus I have spare mag for my Glock in console vault already. That’s about half of an infantry load out in Afghanistan. If that ain’t enough to get me home, then, we’ll, I tried.

We had a gun stolen recently from my wife’s car. She left the door unlocked after we got the groceries unloaded.

I told her she shouldn’t leave the gun in there but you know how women are. Now she sees my point of view.

I don’t leave guns in cars. Never have, never will.

Simple. Gun first, food second.

It was her “carry gun” she left it in the glovebox 24/7.

Personally, I keep my carry pistol on me. Then I will take a long gun of some sort with me each day, and it comes out at night. I can see my car at work, so stuff there is safe.

so what I should say is I sometimes leave a gun in the car, but never overnight.

got my wife a new pistol under one condition, it does not stay in the car overnight.

I leave a gun in the car sometimes. Circumstances sometimes suck. But luckily it usually happens when I still gave eyes on the car.

When I saw you were replying, I thought you were going to list something cute, like your "work" truck gun with 3000rds of ammo. :D

A company called Tuffy sells custom under seat safes for long guns, that fit your truck based on model and year.
I had one in my truck for a while.
Decent construction. Similar to a cheaper folded metal gun safe.
The tumbler locks were a bit hard to use, as I could barely see the numbers.
Install was very easy.

another company Lock’er Down makes custom safes for your center console.
They offer military discounts.
You can get a reinforced door/lid, which is spring activated.
You can order their upgraded electronic lock, with programmable combinations.
Install took less than 5 minutes and it is very secure.
I personally use one currently.

I wear a gun all the time, 24/7, but I also have a “truck” gun to. I have a GHB that has extra mags for my carry gun and a G43 with extra mags and a few odds and ends to ensure that I get back home. When on trips, I throw an AR pistol in either 5.56 or .300 BLK in the truck with my web rig also carrying extra ammo and sometimes my vest and plates. Overreacting ? Maybe. Prepared? Exactly! My wife says it looks like a Combat Op when I pack for a trip, and I have to admit, sometimes it does, but, I have what I need to make ME feel safe! And after being in places all around the world, usually in shitholes that are not nice places, that’s just second nature for me. You need to do what feels good for you. If that’s caring a .380 pop gun or driving a tank, or something in between.

Decided to hop in the truck and head down to meet my dad and brother in Richmond for the night. So this is a typical trip set up for me. My CC next to me and a 300Bkl with a Law folder in my Vertx bag next to me.

it goes in the truck when I get in and I’ll take it up to the room when I get to my destination, Or I can wear the pack around it I want. It’s a “pistol” so covered with my CCW permit.

Where did you get that magazine mount you have on the dash for the Glock mag?

My uncle 3D printed it and it’s mounted there with some industrial 3m adhesive. It will hold a full size pistol very securely too. I’m just in MD so much that I mainly use it to keep a back up mag there.

I have a similar setup,
But it’s strong magnets I ordered from amazon, it’s a little more versatile in that it accepts any mags or pistols

Mine works off magnets too.
