I'm in SC. Is it legal for me to keep a shotgun in my trunk? Can it be loaded or do I have to keep it empty? I have a idea of how to mount it so it can't be easily seen but in easy reach. Thanks

SLED's site doesn't link to any specific info for long guns other than NFA items.
All I could find was a speculative thread on Arfcom that says basically there is no state law but some local ordinaces. If you go to NC or GA then you need to be compliant with their rules and/or the federal law.
Roy Cooper wrote a 2013 opinion/summary where he said NC law does not specifically address how to transport a weapon in an automobile and also that the rule against concealed and accessible applies to all weapons including long guns. You'll have to download a pdf to see it but it's on page 22. http://ncsheriffs.org/images/2007 NC Firearms Laws Pub.pdf

Hopefully someone here knows more about the topic.

In easy reach from outside the car, or from the passenger compartment?

I’ve heard of states that require empty and/or locked transport, but I don’t recall NC/SC/GA being on those lists.

You confuse me. Please clarify.

1. Easily seen? If it's in your trunk, how can it be easily seen?

2. Easy to reach? Again, if it's in your trunk, how can it be easy to reach?

It will be locked in the truck. Can not get to it from passenger department.

Easy to grab from outside, like loading groceries. Hard to see when the trunk is open. So people passing by can't see it.

Thanks

In my trunk the obvious place is inside the trunk just behind the bumper. Would be impossible to see and easy to get to. Need to think about how to secure it, a simple frame would keep it in place other than during an accident. Maybe a tube for the barrel and a block to keep it from sliding out unless it is lifted. Short barrel and youth or shortened stock.

But why? If you’re carrying a handgun why not go for a rifle in the trunk? Seems far more useful to me.

I am of the opinion (please note the word opinion) that if you find yourself in a situation where you feel it necessary to deploy a secondary weapon, or long gun as opposed to a handgun, then at that point you should be deploying the most effective weapon possible. Not the coolest, not the cheapest, not the one you think gives you the least chance of finding yourself in legal trouble.

The most effective weapon depends on a lot of things including environment, your training, situation, etc. But one thing is for sure: if you're going to the trunk for a long gun, be prepared for it all, to defend your life and just as important, your choice.

this ^

I work in a rougher neighborhood and there is a shady mexican club one lot over, and a shady strip club up the street. There is a shooting at least once every couple months, and the aftermath has bled over to our front gate area once or twice. So I keep a folded long gun in my trunk, so that way if things got really crazy I could get my employees to saftey.
