I have some on order but after watching this video, might be better to make your own.

I've been hearing about folks doing this.

It'd be interesting to see how effective a 5/8" Kevlar layup that's been properly infused and vacuumed bagged would be.

Depends on how much you want to spend, and how light you want it.

Personally, the best system I have seen is the Angel Armor Truth series.
    https://angelarmor.com/

The Truth Snap is basically 2 ultra light plates that are each rated 3A. They “snap” together with neodymium magnets. Together they are level 3, and rated up to 308.
They are also so light that they will float.

Just bought a concealed (under clothes) set from Spartan Armory Systems. Front and back soft plates (3A) stop 44Mag. velcro type vest. Is it perfect (no rifle protection) but given I'd rather be concealed - this will work

I haven’t followed the industry for a few years, but I was in armor R&D for about 7 years in my past life. I have a model listed @ NIJ and helped develop the shield that the USMS is using these days. I’ll follow along and see if I can answer any questions.

looks like you need to be in some kind of agency to get some from them?
I got to looking, and HESCO 4401 looks like it might be worth looking into.

Haven't bought any. With my luck somebody would just shoot me in the eye and I'd have spent all that money for nothing.

I saw this and similar videos and thought they were interesting for vehicle door armor where bulk and weight are a little less of a concern vs wearing on your chest. Of course even with armored doors you still have windows sooo...

If you look at Hesco 4401, Look at Body Armor Outlet's NIJ-rated Level IV shooter's cut plates for $120 each. It's made by Hesco in the US, basically the 4401 and branded by BAO. But..........like the Hescos, they're 7.5lb each.

I have a fairly lightweight setup I run comprised of an Agilite K5 PC running Pro Tech level III HDPE+Ceramic plates at around 4lbs each. No way I would double that weight unless I was in a hot warzone.

Definitely want to keep it light so I’ll probably shop around for soft Level IIIA. She’s 115 soaking wet!

Practice moving, especially things that require bending your torso, like getting in and out of a car. It is a lot harder than it sounds with body armor on.
Also, cardio is king. Train... CrossFit has body armor cardio training that is top notch.

Also, if she is only wearing 3A, and she takes a round, it will still break ribs and ruin your day. Look for small, light, hard plates that fit in the front and rear trauma pouches of your carrier.

I just ordered some III+ last week. Plates weigh 5.5 lbs each. If she can handle them, I’ll order another set.

Can say the same thing about thousands of dollars of guns. You may have just funded the Arsenal of the people who murder you...I spent no more on armor than a Glock. Doesn’t HAVE to be expensive. Like anything else, there’s a spectrum

Weight vest training is a thing, and a natural transition for a plate carrier. I am not a CF fan, but it's a good program. Also:

    Nice!
I am not a fan of CF either...
I mean it’s ok, it’s just organized HIIT.
But the fact that it’s such a cult, and members just have to tell you about it... ugh gross

"A Navy SEAL, a crossfitter, and a vegan walk into a bar.... how do you know? They shout it when they walk in...."

Giving credit where credit is due, I do like their WODs and try to incorporate some of their workouts...

I have a half dozen sets of armor I've collected over the last couple decades. Probably still have a set of AR500 plates somewhere even, lol... Now it's concealed IIIa soft and a set of ultra light rifle plates to throw over. Total package is under 10# and most of it is the soft armor and carriers. I still like my ceramic LVL4 so it's by the bed.

The only reason I use steel is because my vest* doubles as a workout weight vest; my only plan to use otherwise is responding to things that go bump in the night at home. Otherwise, I'd get something 1/3 the weight. There are SO many options now. I still tell people if it's low probability but high risk, AR500 is a great, super affordable option...if you don't mind the weight.

*It's an Eagle CIRAS, so I could get the BALCS soft armor and just take out the plates when I am not exercising with it.

I did some tooling work for these folks several years ago. They make both composite and steel products, and have steel plates formed to human curvatures.

They have grown exponentially since then. You can buy direct from them and avoid the "middleman".. If you are local to the Charlotte/Gastonia area, you can pick up at their facility and save on shipping.

Great for a workout and for the money too. These days though armor is getting cheaper and better. Steel isn't the deal it once was.

In the end get what you can afford and work with it. Armor is better than not having armor, weight aside...

Botach sells some Battle Steel III+ plates for about $120 that only weigh 3lbs each. They aren’t certified but they are tested to III+ standards. Mrgunsandgear did a video on them. No problem stopping 855. But they are 10x12” shooters cut. Might be a little big on her.

I’ll probably see what she wants to do after my lightweight plates get here. She just needs something to get to a safe place (house, vehicle, etc.) if something were to happen. No fighting for her. She’ll be in the corner like a scared pussycat. Lol. But with one of my pistols.

Have her wear them around the house for a few hours. That will tell her a lot.
