Turkey Frying

The oil less fryer is good, but not quiet as good as fried in oil. A lot easier, so it wins out. Doing 2 birds next week.

My Char broil oil less fryer works really well. This turkey I cook just a couple of weeks ago came out a bit over done. I seasoned it well then turned it on and hit the range. Came back about 2 hours later and here is what it looked like. It cooks fast, easy to use and minimal clean up needed..

I’ve been on the oiless bandwagon for a the last 10 yrs or so. Got a pretty good recipe dialed in.

Brine the night before. I don’t concern myself with ratios. Just do what feels right.
Salt water
Orange Juice
Lemon Juice
Minced Garlic
Minced onions
A couple bay leaves (5 or so)
Thyme

morning of, rinse brine off and give an hour or two for it to come up to roomish temp.

right before cooking, inject with Tony ChaCharees Butter and Garlic (spelling?). Approximately 1 oz per pound. Cover skin with seasoning of the same brand. Place in cage and touch up seasoning again. I use a CharBroil Bigeasy and it can take a 15-16 lb bird. 10 mins per pound and you’re done. Be sure to give it a wind break if needed or your cook times can go up.

this has been such a big hit amongst family, friends and coworkers that I ended up buying a second cooker. I’ll bring them to work, set them up and leave them, only checking on them every hour or so. Much less attention needed than frying in oil. Cheaper too.

This is so interesting... I didn't even know these existed. I'd heard of the electric airfryer things people use for fries and such in their kitchens and haven't seen anything impressive about them.

These outdoor propane cookers are pretty neat.

This brine sounds pretty darn good, going to give it try in a couple of days.. Thanks for posting..

First year for me with the Char-broil oil-less, but do y'all typically find it more at the 10 minute a pound or 15 for turkey, I know wind and air temp plays a big part cook time? Thanks

Yeah interesting but they are pretty single purpose items. My wife bought me one back a few years ago for Christmas and I remember being just a lil angry she spent that kind of money for something that's just good for cooking turkeys in. I don't even like turkey much ? LOL Now I'm real specific and write down my Christmas wish list so she wont have to think of anything again. In the past 3 years Ive had this, Think Ive used it twice. When you figure in the cost so far, that's some expensive turkey Ive cooked. She bought another whole turkey this year, Think Im just going to cut it apart, cook the breast in the oilless frier, smoke the legs on the smoker and then just boil the rest for the dogs to eat.

I haven't a whole lotta experience with mine, but with my last one ? I allowed 2 hours cook time for a 13 lb turkey and it was a lil over done. Of course, it will depend on the internal temp when you first started and the size/moisture content. If you plan on stuffing the bird, that's going to increase the cooking time.. A heat resistant temp probe inserted in the meaty part of the thigh will be your done point. The airless Char Broil is a lot faster then an oven for sure, but its hard to determine the done time because there to many variables. Its sort like cooking BBQ,, its done when its done.
Clear as Mud right ? Sorry about that.. LOL

Do an oil less turkey every year. Wife sticks fresh rosemary under the skin. (Lots). Rub skin with oil and cook. Most delicious!

Thought about microwaving it after some of the disparaging comments about being sacrilegious about being oil less though

Please let me know how many mins it to cook and what size... You know, never mind the size, I've got a fancy electric microwave. It has a scale in it.

My momma got us one of them air fryers cause it's healthier, so the first thing i cooked up in it was fried twinkies.

Uggg...

I remember when the hot air popcorn popper was all the rage back in the 70s.

It worked like a charm and make popcorn like nobody's business.

But let me tell you...that stuff was disgusting! No oils to impart its flavor to the popcorn and the added bonus of salt not sticking to it because no oil.

Yeah...you could butter it, but it came across like you were attempting to cover up something tasteless...which you were. Just wasn't right.

Remember Jiffy Pop ? Made you work off more calories shaking it then then the pop corn gave you back... Ohhh, I might be on to something? Lets call it the Jiffy pop diet for weight loss...
