UFC talk

Khabib is a true grappler who learned the fist game. Those guys become the champions. The UFC makes boxing look like playground fights. Honestly it probably should be banned. Yeah it’s fun to what people try to kill each other but it is the sport of early death. They think football is dangerous? Just enter the cage and experience attempted murder.

Safer than boxing I think.

Hard to talk and tap at the same time Conner.......I generally like McGregor as a fighter but the Irishman had this ass kicking coming. We all understand he is a great self promoter but a true warrior like Khabib takes the extreme shit talking and vile personal nature of the lead up to the fight personally. Its gone too far now just like the nature of the politics in this country, civil discourse has been replaced by in your face shout downs, ranting and violence. Its really at the feet of Dana White for letting the press conference and weight ins get out of control and not really punishing McGregor for the bus bashing episode really shows with him its all about the money and not about the integrity of the sport and the roots of combat sports in general which teach respect for your opponent and the sport. There is a lot to like about Khabib and he will likely rule the division as long as he chooses. I guess Ferguson is next and that is a great matchup.

Lotta truth here.

MMA is safer. Reason when your knocked down and seem out of it, the fight is supposed to be stopped. Boxing you get a count, can get back up and continue, and take more shots to the head.
Huh. A knee to the skull is lighter than a fist with padding? No way. I boxed youth and been in many, many street fights. No comparison. Mounted and elbows to the face is not fun.

It’s the repeated hitting after the brain is already bruised in boxing. It is the volume of strikes to the head and frequency. Boxing they are still often getting jarred after a hard hit. MMA you take a hard hit and it’s usually over shortly after, because no big gloves and knees ect make for more lbs per inch, which makes a KO easier. KO in boxing and MMA are different, MMA your done, boxing you can take a 8 count and get back to the fight for some more damage.

Just look at the statistics. Football is more Dangerous, heck soccers is more dangerous than MMA. Guys playing football may get hit 50 times in a game with tremendous g force. It’s the frequency that’s so dangerous. MMA is the more effective combat sport for all around fighting, but the game of boxing has more brain damage risk involved.

One blow and you could be dead. Soccer is more dangerous than MMA? Well alrighty. MMA hasn't been around long enough to have stats on the brain trauma. The focus is on football of course due to its popularity. Football participation is way down.

The Black Beast, Derik Lewis. That was a crazy comeback vs Volkov. Possibly a Pro USA Athlete. Said something like Trump called him before the fight, told him he had to beat the Russians LOL!

That was my favorite fight of the night. That dude is hilarious.

Also Mac has always sucked when he ends up on the ground, so I was not surprised when Khabib owned him. Being stuck on the ground with a really good grappler is one of the most frustrating things in the world.

It wouldn’t seem like it, but yes soccer is an injury prone sport. Lot of concussions. Lots of collisions. It’s stats.

UFC has been around since 1993. Tough man was MMA in 1980, and banned in some states. Vale Tudo had little rules in Brazil. Savate has been around since the 1800’s. Catch wrestling has a history. I’ve watched MMA all my life. I watched the first UFC live. I went to MMA events when NC was one of the few states to allow it, grew up an MMA fan. It just seems new to some because it got more popular in the last decade.

^^^ This.

As we have learned more about CTE, look at how NFL treatment of concussions has changed. Used to be a guy got his bell rung and as long as he could stand, he could be in on the next snap. Now, not only is he out for the game, he gets intensive examination, and may not play for weeks. Because we now understand that one concussion makes you much more vulnerable to damage if you are exposed to subsequent concussive hits and even sub-concussive hits without time to heal in between.

So yeah, sports where you get your bell rung and then get up and continue competing are very dangerous for long-term brain health. In MMA, because the fight can go to the ground, when a guy gets his bell rung, the opponent follows him down and since he's generally defenseless, the ref ends the fight, so the fighter isn't subjected to as many subsequent hits as in boxing.

Most people have no idea about Vale Tudo, Catch, Savate, etc, and how long this stuff has been around. One of my Submission Wrestling coaches is Sensei Erik Paulson, who fought Vale Tudo many, many years ago. It's crazy to hear some of the stuff they were allowed to do. Foot stomps to the head/face, groin punches, etc. Boxing has a much higher long term trauma for sure. When I read about the injuries in Soccer (friend's daughter played), I have to admit I was shocked at the severity of some of it.

My Judo / Jujutsu training back in the 90’s and early 2000’s, my Sensei was a Navy guy who was trained by a Shoot Wrestler from Japan 1980’s & 90’s, who trained with Sakuraba. Not many will know that name unless you’re really a fan of old school MMA. I studied Taekwondo as a kid, and got into traditional Japanese Jujutsu training as a teen. Loved submission wrestling. My joints are messed up now, have Ehlers Danlose, which was awesome for Grappling as a teen, sucks now due to early age arthritis and a few other issues with such lax joints.

My 10 year old daughter is really into point sparing, pretty good at it also, has won many tournaments for her age group, even against boys. For right now she dreams of being an MMA fighter and has to watch all the fights on TV lol. She has a darn good side kick. I’m talking too much power for her age in point sparing, We have to get her to pull it. I’ve actually got a little scared for some of the kids she’s spared a few times when she’s rocked those heads.

That's awesome SB. I love seeing kids dig the arts. Hope she does stay with it. Ahh, the Gracie Hunter/Killer. Haven't spoken that name in awhile. Dude was a straight savage. I miss hanging out with Sensei Erik. His Shooto/Vale Tudo stories are of legend, lol. You know your grappling game is legit when the Gracie's throw you out of their camp, haha. I miss the submission wrestling, but my joints do not. Man, it sucks getting old.....lol.

Respect for Ferguson. Hope he gets a big match against McGregor or Khabib, but it’s doubtful. He deserves a big match against McGregor a huge money fighter for top contender , or the Champ Khabib. I’m sure Dana is already thinking about cashing in on a rematch McGregor doesn’t deserve yet imo, and Furguson will get screwed again.

C&p

UFC star Tony Ferguson slammed Khabib for his actions.

"It was absolutely unprofessional and uncalled for," he said.

"We're trying to clean the sport up and take it towards Olympic level and it was bad part on Khabib.

"He should have taken the win, taken the belt and walked away like a man.

"Then we saw this melee which was embarrassing.

"You have grudge matches in all sports but once you get in the octagon and fight, that's that. I'm upset and I'm appalled."

I don't think Conor gets to fight Khabib next. I don't think that many people would be interested in a rematch. Khabib absolutely dominated McGregor - even standing up, it was Khabib who landed the best strike. Why would anyone want to watch a repeat of that.

Then again, I predicted that Conor vs Mayweather would be a joke, which it was, yet people clamored to see that nonsense.

I'd like to see McGregor v Ferguson. If he can beat Ferguson, then he gets Khabib. I also think this makes more sense from Dana White's perspective - he knows that if he puts Conor in with Khabib again, he will just get mauled again and show everyone once again that he is, to quote Khabib, "a tap machine". That would be terrible for McGregor's star and for the UFC. Better to pit him against Ferguson, where he stands a chance.

Agreed. I think Ferguson makes sense, and it’s what I think should happen, but I bet it doesn’t. They should fight for top contender while this mess with Khabib jumping the ring is sorted out with the commission. Remember the first Diaz fight which McGregor lost? A rematch was the next fight, and cashed in on. People did pay to see it again, but McGregor did surprise everyone with a better game plan. A second loss to Diaz was a huge risk, and he would have never cashed in on Mayweather, or had the popularity and marketing power he does now had he lost twice to Diaz. Khabib rematch right now would be a huge risk, but huge award if he did pull off a miracle.

He'll just get steam rolled again.

They need to sign Ben Askren. I'd like to see who could smother who.

This came together at the last minute, but UFC 230 main event is Derrick Lewis (yes, he just fought in UFC 229) vs DC. As everyone knows, by pro MMA standards, Lewis can't do BJJ, can't wrestle, can't kick, his striking skills are mediocre, and his cardio is poor. So it's not a great matchup against the highly skilled, high endurance, albeit much smaller DC . . .

. . . but Lewis hits like a truck.

Everyone, including Dana, is expecting this to be an appetizer for the big money Brock v DC fight. But Lewis might have something to say about that, as he did in the waning seconds of his last fight.

UFC 232 in late December looking good.

Jon Jones v Gustafsson for the light heavyweight title (DC will be stripped, so this is for the real belt, not an interim belt)
Cyborg v Nunes (Nunes going up to 145 for this)

Furguson might can wrestle on a level with Khabib, although age and injuries are against him. He was a High school state champion 2002, NCWA Collegiate National Champion back in 2006, and two time All American. This is the background needed to have a chance, and he might have the best chance of anyone yet, even though I still think Khabib is the favorite to win.

After 3 times being canceled due to injuries, I hope this fight makes it.

Shalorus- wrestler 8th in olympic qual tourney
Abel Trujillo- 4A state champion (he actually took Khabib to a decision)
Michael Johnson- Top Ncjaa wrestler
Tibau- Brazilian state wrestling champion

All pretty much ragdolled by Khabib.

Hopefully crazy Tony can hurt him before it goes to the ground! He's also got a creative and offensive guard, and great subs.

Will be a fun fight to watch! I love Ferg.

Would be interesting to see him vs Till.

He’s never lost a fight to sub or ko, and the last decision against Tyron was suspect.

I like Wonderboy a lot with his kickboxing, he hides that kick behind punches so well.

I’d like to learn kickboxing

LMAO. This guy is 6'8", 320lbs, so there will always be people willing to pay to watch a guy this big fight, but as far as I know he has no wrestling, BJJ, kickboxing or boxing background. And he looks slow as molasses. And we know guys this huge get gassed easily.

Even in his current state, I think most of the heavyweights in the UFC would whoop him, despite giving up a lot of weight. Once he stops juicing long enough to pass USADA testing, I think most of the light heavyweights in the UFC would beat him, again, despite giving up a ton of size to him.

He should stick to bodybuilding and movies and not risk the injuries and beatings that come with MMA.

That said, if he fights, I'd love to see him fight Ngannou - that way we won't have to worry about a boring ground fight, and can just watch both guys throwing haymakers. And Ngannou can get his groove back while knocking this guy's head into orbit.

He’d be in for a long night with Cornier.

Be instant takedown and top control.

Be interesting to see him fight Brock in a roid rage freak show!

Brock would just take him down and pummel him. Would need to be someone who doesn't wrestle/BJJ at all, like Ngannou.

DC won, as expected, and he made it look so easy. It really highlights the lack of depth at HW. You have DC and Stipe and then everyone else. Blaydes may be moving up; he's got Ngannou next, and that should be a pretty easy fight for him as he'll look to take it to the ground.

Adesanya looked great - float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. And how about Souza coming back after being down 2 rounds (IMHO) and finishing Weidman in that fantastic brawl of a fight. Props to Souza for not wanting to hit a defenseless Weidman after the clear KO.

UFC 231 will have Joanna Not Champion going up to fight Shevchenko for the Flyweight belt. I think Valentina is going to curbstomp Joanna. She's been fighting much bigger women than Joanna and has beaten her 3x in kickboxing matches.

Mayweather vs Teshin.

Who is Teshin?

Not sure what modified rules that will be used, but if Teshin can kick, Mayweather goes down.
