What's the proper wordage for gently lowering the hammer on a revolver?

I'm leaning towards uncock, but I need to get it correct.

"Careful" comes to mind!

Seriously... I'm all about context. I'm pretty sure I'd understand either way and I wouldn't care which.

"De-cock" PROBABLY originates from the descriptive function of a "de-cocker" on a semiautomatic handgun.

Older phraseology which goes back decades, or more, likely used "un-cock" or "lower".

Either way, grammatically speaking, would be acceptable in today's usage.

I would just smile at anybody who has a hard spot with it either way and carry on smartly.

Agree with this.

You might have a difficult time finding decock in some of the online dictionaries. There are also several different meanings given in those same dictionaries for uncock including one that makes reference to a surgical procedure that would have the same result as someone having an unintended discharge while carrying a handgun in the appendix location.

You would have to ask @Geezer
On a revolver I say uncock or let the hammer down.
On a semi auto, if it has a decocker, I would call it decock. If it doesn't have a decocker and it has a hammer, I'd say uncock or let the hammer down, same as a revolver.
All this discussion about decock and uncock makes me wonder if @Derek8404 's alerts are going crazy.

Yep. My wife got a'hold of her dad's .38 snubby when she was very young, pulled the hammer back and then couldn't figure out how to get it back to where it was. She shot the toaster.

.

My wife asked me why i carry a gun in the house.

I looked at her and said DECEPTICONS. She laughed, i laughed, the toaster laughed, i shot the toaster, it was a good time.

Is de-cock the same term as Bobbitize?
Was such an ironic name. When you shorten an animal's tail or ears they're referred to as bobbed.
