Talk to me about barrels. I'm starting to research building my upper. This is a budget build but weight is a concern. I wouldn't mind spending a little more on a good barrel.

I have a Barnes with a match grade barrel and I don't shoot much past 100 yds. Basically just plinking, no competition. However, I don't want to build complete junk either.

I've been looking at the Faxon pencil, 1:8, 16". Decent quality, light weight.

Anyway, I'm just looking for opinions, I've also looked at Faxon socom barrels and they come in at about 1/2 lb heavier so it might be a good trade off.

Thoughts?

I thought about a pistol build. I have the lower classified as an other. If I could do an sbr without dealing with nfa.....so I think for now, I'll just build a rifle.

Oh its not that, I don't really have a place to shoot past 100. There are a couple I could join buy I just don't shoot long range enough to warrant the cost of membership.

The Faxon is a perfect barrel for your use.

It is very good for the money, imo.

There's no other way to classify one...

stripped or built, stock or not...they're all "other firearm" on the 4473, and you can build them into a pistol or rifle

Maybe that is why he looked at my funny... :)

Ballistic Advantage barrels are great for the money. You can find the Hanson profiles at great prices and they are awesome barrels with a cut to reduce weight but still maintain rigidity.

Of all the places to put money into an AR, for accuracy, the barrel is way up the list. If it's not up to snuff, doesn't matter what else goes on. There are a number of good barrels out there, the real decision is on twist rate. 1:8 is a decent compromise. Next make sure you have a good trigger.
