My wife is 'surprising me' with a weekend getaway....to Charlotte. Why, I don't know. I told her a cabin in the woods would be great, or an AirBNB near the Gulf Coast...but I got Charlotte. What are you gonna do?

She's booked hotel (Aloft Uptown) and a bunch of things to do 'all within walking distance of the hotel'. Money is spent, reservations made, wife is determined it's a good idea....so cancelling isn't gonna happen.

Is that area of the city relatively calm and safe? Normal EDC or do I need to drag around my SBR backpack, plates and comms to call in artillery?

Live in south Charlotte and go into the city often. Pre-pandemic, the Aloft was JUST WHERE YOU WANTED to be - restaurants, bars, an adult fun zone. Now, not so much. But walking around is fun. NASCAR museum is walking distance - good BBQ joints short drive away. ARIA, (Italian) is walking distance from the hotel - good food. Blackstone Shooting Sports and Hyatt Guns are close to down town and might be worth a visit. I CCW everywhere.

This calls for drastic measures. Take a half dozen Ducolax the day before. After y’all finish cleaning up the explosive diarrhea, she will not ask you to go.

That part of town is relatively well lit, high end, and safeISH. Normal EDC measures should suffice. I used to work in the NASCAR bldg on occasion.

used to work downtown... be smart about your travels and keep moving you will be fine. stay away from freedom dr. and noda no matter how gentrified they appear in the day light... if you go to north tryon or sugar creek bring the jdams or moabs and expect to need an A10 for close in support if the first 2 dont work.

One of the most overrated places you’ll ever go…

And no chance I’d venture into NoDa during the month of June. It’s weird enough the rest of the year.
They have three locations in Charlotte, I've never been disappointed with their baked goods, plus the clientele is amusing to watch.

Just spent 2 days downtown for a work meeting with Husqvaran folks from Sweden. We walked everywhere even at night. A little self awareness and I wouldn’t get staggering drunk and leave a bar at 1 am to walk several blocks - short of that you will be fine . I went the deep concealed route ( Hellcat )

The only thing I see Uptown that really bothers me is the number of homeless folks who clearly are in need of their anti -psychotic meds. They can be aggressive, I'm seen them put hands on pedestrians minding their own business. I just give them a lot of space and keep a eye on my surroundings. You'll see private security on the side walks near any of the bank offices, and they tend to chase the vagrants off.
