USAF Leave request for away from local area...please tell me it's a joke

This particular Airman is a career SMSgt with nearly twenty years under his belt. He is a Crew Chief on multi-billion dollar fighter aircraft and responsible for not only the aircraft but the people under him. He has had no adverse actions and was promoted faster than his peers. Additionally, he has deployed for numerous contingency (combat) operations and has received awards for those. But he is not unique in all of this. He is actually more the standard than the exception.

In any case, a model Airman right? Someone who can be trusted. So, guess what his Commander requires when he wants to take leave away from the local area of the base?

  1. Verification that his record of emergency contacts is up to date. He must email a copy to his Commander.
  2. Certification that he has purchased enough masks to last the duration of the leave period with multiple changes. (I wonder if this Commander makes sure his female subordinates have enough feminine hygiene products on hand prior to approving their leave?)
  3. Photos of the approved M-95 masks that were purchased for the trip.
  4. A copy of his route if driving, including hotel and mandated stops for rest.
  5. A copy of all airline tickets/reservations, hotels reservations, and car rental arrangements.
  6. An itinerary of where he will be going and what he will be doing at the final leave location.
  7. A certification that he will not deviate from his itineraries without leadership approval.
  8. Documentation of masking laws for the various states and cities he will be transiting through and visiting along with a statement that he will abide by all those ordinances.
  9. Affirmation that he will abide by all applicable laws and Air Force AFIā€™s including AFI 1-1, even in civilian clothes. This includes the consumption of marijuana, even in locations where it is legal.
  10. A test text message between him and the Commander and affirmation that he will not turn his phone off or let the battery get below 50% charge.

I believe id route that policy straight to the adc, leave is a right, not subject to the whims of a douche

Iā€™ve never had to report to my boss when on leave! Hell, he didnā€™t want to hear that I was having a good time while he was still working! Some of those things are enforceable, the others are just being a dick!
 
It's all about CYA. When I joined i the late 80s, we still had Vietnam Vets as PSGs, 1SGs, CSMs and BCs. Screw up and you got your ass handed to you for real. I retired in 08 all I hear from my former soldiers is "Good thing you got out when you did cause you'd have never made it under Obama". lol

I heard recently you can be investigated for yelling at a soldier. Nothing will surprise me anymore.
 
It sounds like the USAF is offering to fly him to his destination since that is the only way for USAF leadership to approve a re-routing of aircraft.
 
Never been in the .mil so idk whatā€™s normal, but in my mind leave = vacation. What I do on vacation is non of your business. That sounds quite extreme.

Yes, leave = vacay. There's also weekend libo (liberty in the Navy/Marines, the weekend off), 72-hr libo (long weekend), holiday libo, school libo (liberty during schools, usually one of the more restrictive types of liberty).

Leave/vacation liberty is usually not super restrictive, but they do place some parameters on it in case of emergency recall and in case you end up in the hospital kind of thing. Nothing nearly as onerous or as restrictive as in the OP post. In the military, "your" time is really never ever your own.

Things have changed drastically. Army base my son is on letā€™s the leave now but at one time no stores, no restaurant visits allowed off base. Now not more than one hour unless vacation leave approved with destination documented. But he is in Lithuania now with no gun, no ammo, and Army budget is blown due to inflation so they cannot even train Nato forces anymore or afford plane home. FJB

When my niece and her husband, an Army E-8 (same rank as USAF SMSgt), visited he had to take leave because a 4 hour drive away was too far. They visited for a few days. It was great hosting them. At the time hes was first shirt at a base in VA that is more secure than the new NSA HQ in VA.
Not sure what papers he had to file.
I never had to do any of that back when I took leave. Just had to get the okay from the shop super, a MSgt. I was an E-3 that last time I took leave on active duty. Didn't take any leave my last year and half in.

Too many years (and idgaf about it), but i seem to remember a 6 or 8hr radius that didn't require use of leave

True story. When I was stationed at Holloman in NM, I found out my uncle, who nobody on my side had seen in 18 years, was up in ABQ. About 200 mile ride. Took my roommate and me 8 hours to get there the first time were went up. Stopped at a bar every 50 miles or so. Had a few beers.
I was sober next time we went. Only took 3 hours. Ha!

Yeah...looking into my becoming-faded memory vault...72 hours was one radius, 48 another. Leave further than 8-hour call back had some rule.

School libo, something like anything over 100 miles on a weekend required itinerary and contact numbers, no flying, some other rules. There are 'regular' school rules like certain establishments were off-limits, couldn't go into Mexico (San Diego/Pendleton/Coronado), etc.

As long as I didn't have the duty no one ever denied my requests.

The mil is very annoying when they want/need to get ahold of someone and can't.
 
A lot of that is COVID specific. Tyrants would be doing that for every one of us if they thought they could get away with it.
 
Maybe the NCO in question is in a sensitive slot where they may need him back, healthy, in very short notice? Leave is rarely untouchable leave, always subject to recall. Or maybe the NCO is pissed about all of this and laid iton a bit thick?
 
30 years ago I had a division officer that had all of us fill out a 72 hour liberty chit with no dates he kept them in his desk and if you had a issue traveling on a weekend all you had to do was call him and he filled out the dates and covered your butt. He said that we covered his every time he went flying in a Intruder that we checked and launched

Had a mustang DivO who rode Harleys and took the Division out for beers at least one night every quarter.
He didnt have us prefill anything, he would just straight forge it lmao

When my son died of SIDS I was a Framp instructor at VA 42 and my Framp officer sent me on leave and when I got back he pulled the papers out of his desk and circle filed them He also went to the CO and closed the school for the funeral and all the instructors showed up in dress uniforms. Matwing took up a collection from all the east coast squadrons for me even though I did not need it (I donated the money to Sids Research I have worked for some great people

I was in the Coast Guard from 2004 to 2010. My last 4 years I was working at the highest level of CG Deployable Operations.

We also had strict rules and had to get permission anytime we traveled more than 100 miles from our base, in San Diego.

I also had to get permission to get married, and separate permission to go on my honeymoon.

I think they issue a set of instructions. Insert tab a in slot 1. Adjust tip 17 degrees clockwise. Etc.
 
When I was on AD in the AF in 80's and 90's, missionary is the only legal position under the UCMJ. My boss hurt his back and had to have some serious rehab, the Doc had to give him a wavier to let him and his wife have sex with her on top.
