I grew up on Army bases so seeing military aircraft buzzing around is nothing new to me, but I can’t say I’ve ever seen an Osprey tilt rotor around these parts, several locals were apparently concerned about it based on the conversation I overheard, I mentioned that it’s probably just a training exercise but a couple of the guys talking about it weren’t convinced lmao.

well, i missed seeing that one....but i have an Osprey question:
why would they fly in pairs?
here is the deal....

two weeks ago, at Topsail Island, we saw lots of rotor aircraft,
however the Ospreys were always flying in pairs. no singles.
Instructor/Student?

just curious.

New River MCAS north of TI is home to several training squadrons of the MV-22 and CH-53 (K model the new King Stallion) and I think at least the AH-1 SuperCobras (though I'm not 100% on that). So likely it is part of training should something go wrong with the airframe there is another nearby. They use all the airports around ENC for training flights and practice takeoff/landings etc. Sometimes they are in pairs and sometimes singles. For about a good 2 years they would use Greenville for training landings and takeoffs on Thursdays. So, if you forgot the day you'd know when Thursday's are, but not so much here lately. I can usually catch 2 a week now.

Regarding the OP post, I begin to worry when there's been more than 2 days with no mil flights overhead. I'm more likely to see the contract A-4s out of Kinston, the KC-130J refuelers out of Cherry Point, all the squadrons of F-15s and, KC-135s, the new KC-46s out of Semour Johnson, and now in the last 6-9 months there are 2 daily flights of USN C-2 at 21kft flying between Norfolk and Jacksonville on some sort of milk run. Last week several of the SAM aircraft (painted like Airforce 1) the C-32 (757 airframes) and C-20s (Gulfstream business jets) were in the pattern using Kinston KISO for practice.

The Corps' Ospreys are stationed right up the river at New River. They often fly in pairs or threes, especially before a deployment.

The training squadron for the AH-1Z Viper is at Camp Pendleton, but yes, the training squadrons for the CH-53 and MV-22 are at New River. Point of trivia, the Air Force and Navy also train on the MV-22 at New River.

Training flights they always do in pairs or more, at least all the helicopters I've seen moving around. I remember once when I was a kid a SC National guard Apache developed problems and had to land in the hay field in front of my house. Couple minutes after that one landed 2 more touched down near it. The crew stayed with it and the others took off. Couple hours later they brought in a big 2 & 1/2 with a loading crane and one of the military semis with a flatbed and loaded it up and took it away. Sadly my plans for how I was going to go to school went back to the normal boring one.

I see and hear Ospreys everyday. It’s gotten so I can tell when they’re banking by the noise. They do touch and goes at an airport about five miles away as the crow flies. Also plenty of CH-53’s and occasionally Cobra’s and Huey Venoms. There’s also an E-2 Hawkeye or two that passes over each day.
Last week I watched an Osprey rotating it’s engines while passing over our local Wal Mart. I wondered if that was the brightest thing to do considering how many people they were passing over and the number of bean fields close by.

Every few months we have what I believe is a C17 doing touch & go’s at the airport in Greensboro, I used to know military aircraft fairly well when I lived on Bragg back in the 80s, C141 & C130s were the bulk of the fixed wings we would see, but now I struggle to ID the newer stuff.

After reading the comments here, I’m kind of wanting to see if we can form a meet & greet at an air show next year, from the looks of it those of us that are simply enthusiasts could learn a good deal from a few of you guys.

I’ll never pass up and opportunity to hit the USAF museum up in Ohio and spend hours soaking in all the aircraft, I know WW2, Korea &
Vietnam era warbirds fairly well as well as the experimental birds we’ve all see on the show “Wings” or the History channel.

Heck I’d love to hit the tank Museum in Danville as well, I imagine a couple to a dozen of us members could get into all kinds of shenanigans lol

The NCANG flies C-17 out of Charlotte so it could be. Also, Joint Base Charleston is not that far through it seems most out of there goes to FL, GA, or TN for training. I've seen a fair amount of C-17s and KC-135s over ENC that come out of Joint Base McGuire-Dix up in NJ.

I live in Southern Alamance County. Ospreys fly over pretty regularly.

I was in edisto over the weekend and late at night i heard 2 ... somethings flying low overhead.
didn't sound like planes, but also didn't sound like helicopters.
i know i've seen them flying around south of bragg a few times

The sighting by the OP could very well be an Osprey flying out of or into KBUY after or before refueling at an FBO there. Elon Aviation maybe.

There are fixed based operations all over the country that have contracts with the government and military to provide fuel for their aircraft.

At least I think there used to be contracts. They may just pay for fuel and ramp fees on the spot now. Not sure.

I've seen them training up around Hickory airport for hours at a time. Went out once to watch them. When Trump was her the Secret Service Osprey's flew right over me as I was driving to work. They came in crazy low and coming right up 33rd st.

They fly over my house on a weekly basis here at Kerr Lake.

Speaking of Ospreys, I was at the Burbank Bob Hope airport when Obama was in town shaking down the wealthy for donations. Two of the Marine crewed presidential helos plus a gaggle of Ospreys lifted off and headed to LAX with the presidential party. It sure seemed like a lot of aircraft to move the pres and his entourage around! Obama managed to paralyze traffic throughout L.A. and delay dozens of flights at Burbank and LAX.
