I hate having to find bulb equivalencies for vehicles.

I hate it even more than having to take my car to the service department for something stupid that I don't have time or tooling to do myself.

Just. Gimme. A. Frickin'. Common. Bulb. Part. Number. From. AutoZone.

Oh yeah...and list ALL the bulbs in the owner's manual for the vehicle, d*mmit!

That is all.

It's on page 92 of my owner's manual

Sure. And it's on pages 283 and 284 in my owner's manual for my 2000 Lexus RX300.

Know what's NOT on those pages? The bulb for the gear shifter display that I'm looking for.

Google-fu turns up part number 90981-11018.

The Lexus forum I found that on had some random Joe claim its equivalent part number at the parts store is a number 74.

Puttering around longer on the internet trying to confirm this seems to agree.

A little more research on the internet and it seems it's the same bulb as the glove box.

Which the owner's manual says is "wedge base bulb, 1.2 W". Bulb Town online seems to agree the Sylvania #74 is it, at 1.4 W.

All that for a stupid bulb.

Good news is I might have that in my handy-dandy I-Hate-Looking-Up-Bulbs-For-The-Cars kit I put together for all our vehicles.

Bad news is it's in the trunk of my LeSabre, currently at the service department for a $400 power steering problem I don't have the frickin' time to do myself.

Google the year make and model followed by modified life. They have charts with most vehicles... all the bulbs listed

They show the glove box, but not the gear shifter. Glove box confirmed to be a #74.

Anyway...off to AutoZone later.

Yeah, OK...about that #74.

Horse. Sh*t.

Close...oh, so close.

Right voltage. Right wattage.

Not quite the right bulb size, physically.

NOT, mind you, that you can actually NOTICE this in the package I just spent $5.99 for.

Base is OK, but the bulb itself is ever so slightly fatter than the original.

Which means it won't fully seat in the socket. Enough it'll work, but not enough to keep it from falling out of the socket when you try reinstalling it into the gear shift.

Thereby necessitating the use of a pair of needle nose pliers to get it out.

Which are in the trunk of my LeSabre. You remember that car, right? The one currently in the shop getting power steering pump work done on it?

Now I'm the proud owner of yet ANOTHER pair of needle nose pliers ($2.99), in addition to ANOTHER pack of bulbs (#2723, 2.3 watt, $5.99).

I don't mind a higher wattage bulb...except for the green rubber sleeve I transferred to the new one. Oh, well...when this burns out, if the sleeve melted it'll just get replaced without a green sleeve!

And darned if I can find the glove box bulb, because it's probably burned out, too. Might just not be one at all, as far as I can tell.

What a pain!

Stupid bulbs.

Top bulb is original. Middle the #74. Bottom #2723.

damn that’s irritatingly close.

Well...I'm surprised!

The illuminated TRAC OFF push button has a replaceable bulb/socket.

Darned if I could find it in the parts stores, and ran into the "maybe" problem again trying to find what I needed, even knowing the switch part number.

Screw it...off to a local Toyota dealer service department.

About a minute after showing the lady at the parts counter, she's back with the light.

$8.

I'm down with that! After popping it in the switch, I googled the part number and I really couldn't have done much better online, especially of it were from a place I had to pay shipping for.

I'm keeping the old one, sho I can find just the bulbs and replace the bulb in the socket. Then it'll go in the bulb kit.
