I think they get around it by saying you’re a contract worker and not actually an employee. This was years ago, it may have changed.

I was helping with an event to teach women to shoot...
One of the attendees said it was her first time firing a gun, and she was on armored truck crews.
Apparently they just said "here's a gun, put it on your belt" and sent her to go run money.
