Video: "Springfield Hellion: The VHS-2 Bullpup Comes to the US"

Very cool of Springfield to import this. I have wanted one since I found out about it a few years ago. Didn’t think import was possible because of old import laws. I hope I can get my hands on one.

It looks well made after watching him disassemble it. Springfield does it again!

Backorder - $1,978 (with coupon code: “Welcome20”)

I dig the look, I want one. But I think I’ll wait it out a bit to see what the market does to the price point

Played around in the store with a Hellion for the first time today. Carolina Gunrunners in Raleigh had this in stock for $1,860 @Jk919

I don’t own a bullpup so it felt pretty foreign to me. I compared it with the AUG they also had in store…

-Hellion had better controls (imo), more “AR-like” which is what I’m comfortable with. Hellion safety is easy to toggle with thumb.

-Hellion felt significantly heavier than the AUG

-Hellion has a 2-position “stock”, the collapsed position seemed most comfortable to me… you’d have to be really lanky to run it extended?

-Hellion push-button flip-up iron sights were nice - I liked that the collapsed position was flush with that carry handle rail. Button action felt good to open but was annoying to press to close.

-The Hellion felt “shorter” than the AUG… shorter distance between the pistol grip & end of muzzle device?

-The AUG felt more ergonomic. Hellion felt good shouldered, just not as “fitted” as the AUG for me

-Hellion felt very plastic to me. They’re obviously both plastic, so I’m not sure what I expected. I’m sure it’s durable enough but meh plastic

Since I own a Tavor X95..

Great comparison video, no bs.

I forgot the Hellion had adjustable gas.

The video also reminds me of some other Hellion CONS I picked up on…

-The bolt release “pinch” behind the mag was rough, not a fan at all. You don’t necessarily have to “pinch” it but I didn’t love that motion & it required more force than expected. I intuitively tried to release the bolt by pulling the CH back & letting go but it didn’t work for me in the store, had to pinch

-The charging handle felt kinda cheap - seems like a weak point with the hinge pivot & it being made of plastic. All the controls were plastic? Bolt release, safety, maybe trigger

-I’m not as experienced with the AK-style mag release, prefer the index finger AR / Tavor.

-Interesting point he brought up about the Hellion safety - very few degrees of travel & the white indicator line seems like it should be perfectly horizontal on safe. But I had no trouble toggling it with my thumb like he did in the video… pretty sure I was able to reach the safety with my right thumb while holding the grip regular

-His shooting demo was nice, positive feedback - never really know til you shoot something at the range.

I was really hung-ho on buying a Hellion as my first bullpup once pricing cooled down. Aesthetically, I like the look over other bullpups & I always thought the VHS-2 was cool. But it’s not a priority at any point in the close future… I don’t doubt that it’s a better shooter than me, it just didn’t wow me personally today in the store 🤷🏼‍♂️ And I need another $2k 5.56 gun like I need a hole in my head.

I've had one bullpup and it was a cheap Walther 22. I improved the trigger by rolling up a piece of corrugated card and jamming it in the stock to give the trigger bar less space to flex into.

I just like this Helghast looking thing. I'm sure it's not as easy to shoot or as capable as a basic Ar15 because trigger linkages and bullpup ergos always are a poor compromise, but I sort of want one anyway.

I wanted one, went to the PSA Gathering last weekend and got to shoot it, now I want no part of it. Just was clunky and not fun to shoot from standing position. Shot an IWI Tavor and now I want one of those!

To me it did not fit well. I did not like the controls. The balance on the firearm was not comfortable. I went to the gun show to buy it and after shooting I wanted no part of it. It was very heavy in the rear of the gun whereas the Tavor was balanced. As a result I was compensating for the weight in the rear while shooting. When I shot the Tavor, the representative said to me, "Oh you have shot bullpups before, I can tell from how you handled it." This was the first time I shot a bullpup but the Travor balanced so nice it was natural.

Alas it was lost in the post divorce sales. It was a great little rifle honestly, but for plinking.
