Video: Vortex Nation .270 Winchester vs 30-06 Springfield — Best Deer Cartridge is?

308 Win/7.62x51 hands down. Similar ballistics to 30-06 in a smaller & lighter short action rifle. Ammo weighs less with less recoil. For deer sized game bullet selection is perfect and it's very flat shooting and accurate. Capable of taking game at distances further than most people can shoot. Just my opinion though. I'd choose 308 over 270 or 30-06 any day.

I’ve killed many deer with both. All of them were the same amount of dead. Never really had to track any of them either. With good shot placement that’s a non-issue.

They’re both good rounds I’ve been killing deer with the same 270 my dad gave me for Christmas when I was 17. I’ve killed a ton of deer, coyotes, beavers and other varmints with it.

On larger game, shot placement is all that matters. You can kill deer with a 17HMR if you put it in the right spot. And a 22lr was supposedly responsible for killing an elephant once.

Seems to me that they are comparing the rifles more than chamberings. If they really did want to compare the chamberings, two rifles of the same kinds should be used.

Deer are not hard to kill if you hit them properly. Hitting them properly is the main problem. The problem gets greater when you increase the distance. A 270 may shoot a tad flatter, but how much extra range does that give you? Not much. You can make up for the flatter projector by knowing the trajectory of the load you are using. Do you really want to shoot at a whitetail at distances great enough to be able to take advantage of the small differences? Both chamberings have more than enough power to kill any whitetail I have ever seen at greater distances than I am comfortable shooting. I have killed more deer with a 30/06 BAR than with any other gun I have for the simple reason that I have used it more. Next in line is a M70 in 7mm RM. I have carried it a lot because I like the way it shoots. I have one stand from which I can look down and old railroad bed perhaps 800 yards but never try a shot at over about 250 yards with whatever chambering I happen to be using on any given day. I do not really need to with all the deer in the area. Another one will probably come along after a while. My ability and comfort are the limiting factors rather than the chambering. They are capable of longer shots than I comfortable attempting.
