Virginia blocks Northam gun bill

Shocking. Seriously, how often do we see people not vote party lines on major issues these days?

Good for them. You could argue that those Dems were true patriots for a day.

That's something I've wondered, too. It's as if you could predict what would pass or fail based on who held the majority.

Anybody know how many (I think there were 9 or so to start with) that:
1. Passed
2. Didn’t pass or were withdrawn
3. Haven’t been votes on

True.
But I'll probly still call their offices or email and thank them.
Definitely. Stereotyping here not knowing them AT ALL, but would assume their constituents speaking up is only reason they did vote as such

I lived in VA for over 15 years and this does not surprise me at all. Look at the 2 who voted against it.

Creigh Deeds represents a rural area near the WV border. It includes Covington, VA He has been in office since 2001. He has often run unopposed. This was not about political survival for him as much as it is about who he represents. This is a very working class coal and timber area. They have been pro Union and pro democrat for years but at the same time are a rural area who enjoys hunting, shooting and the outdoors. It makes sense for him to vote this way.

Chap Petersen has walked both sides of the line as a VA House member and a VA Senate member. He represents the redrawn 34th district. He is lawyer and has been linked in the past to VCDL. He often seems to vote on gun with a pragmatic legal perspective of what can pass and hold up vs what can't. In 2007 he was attacked on gun issues by the anti-gun RINO Devolites-Davis. He has pro gun support in a very wealthy part of Fairfax county. This is one of the wealthiest areas in the country but still has old money roots in farming. He has been in office since 2007.

These are established politicians who know who they represent.

Make politicians afraid again

But that is not what happened here. These 2 did no vote the way they did out of fear. They voted based on their districts and the bill in front of them.

Peterson stated. "We’ve done a lot with guns this session. A lot,” Petersen said. “I think we’re starting to get more into intra-family dynamics than we are firearms.”

A politician will vote against their party when they fear an opposition challenger more than they fear a primary challenger. It works out pretty much the same as them representing the interests of their constituents and is one reason why gerrymandering is generally bad, we want them worried about losing their jobs all the time.

I wouldn’t call them patriots. How about self-preservationists?
I did say just for a day haha but sure. Regardless of their motives they saved us this time. I suspect they put targets on their backs within the party though.

That is not the case with these two within VA politics. They both voted in a pretty consistent manner with their track record. Both have been elected multiple times. The target was already there. People keep looking at this from the outside from a singular lens which does not match the reality on the ground. There are many pro gun areas within VA and other parts of the country which are also Blue. It is not as cut and dry as the mainstream media and the NRA tell you it is.

I know nothing about VA politics beyond what has been discussed around 2A circles recently, but also don’t follow MSM nor the NRA.
Thanks for the info.

I lived in VA for 15+ years. My wife’s family is still there. The majority of the state it terms of geography is Red. The larger population centers are Blue. They picked off enough in the last round to take the legislature. I doubt it will happen again but you never know. MSM, the NRA and others want to make it a them vs us scenario that can be presented as black and white while in the end it is mostly gray.

Deeds district mine as well be in WV. It is right on the border headed into coal country. Lived in Beckley,WV for 3 years and know the area well.
