If you listen close, you can hear the steel getting pinged before you see the smoke and muzzle blast.

Just about everyone that shoots a flintlock for the first time expects the “lock time” to be delayed. This video/audio is the best illustration I’ve found yet to show that a flinter is a lot faster than expected.
