Wake Action Pistol

I believe they are, I am happy scotty's business is taking off but he should hand the reigns over if he cant handle it, too many of us love that match, it is just a good time to talk junk to your buddies and a great first match to take new people too. It also doesn't help that the range people are giving him crap all the time.

Edit: see my clarification below

I fear that our beloved weekday matches are coming to an end....

His email said he has hired on some help so he should be able to not cancel them anymore. I know he really like running the matches, so I think he'll find a way to turn things around.

My other comment came off like I don't want Scotty running the matches, I hope he never stops, and that's good too hear. I don't want him to turn it over unless he has too

Normally there would be a match scheduled for Wednesday. Not sure if registration has opened yet.

E-mail as of this morning, FYI:

"Unfortunately. I'm canceling the match tomorrow night. The powers that be scheduled a CHH class that night knowing full well well we need all 4 ranges. I don't feel that we can give you a good match on three ranges.
That being said the matches will continue on next month.
If you are one of my range officers, please shoot me an email, I want to get an RO list together so I can email just you guys. so we can discuss things

Thanks again. I know how much you guys enjoy the matches, that's why I keep doing them.

If you have any questions let me know

Scotty"

No more matches for at least 2 months.... just got this from Scott this morning. Looks like we might have to learn to play IDPA soon. :(

Hi Everyone,

Wake Action Pistol matches have been canceled for the month of May. It has also come to my attention that Eric Shuford and his team at the Wake Range want to cancel the matches for the month of June as well.

I want to keep all of you in the shooting community in the loop. I have been running this match for three years and we’ve never had an issue of any kind. Now management feels that we are a liability to the Wake Range. As you know, our matches are very safe. We’ve been accused of multiple infractions, such as shooting walls and other damage to the facility. All of which is incorrect.

It is my belief that Mr. Shuford has a personal vendetta against me and that’s the reason that he desires the Wake Action Pistol Match to be canceled indefinitely. Regardless of what is happening between me and Wake Range management, I know how much you guys love shooting the match and I would hate to see it go away.

Mr. Shufford has said that no one has mentioned or complained that matches have been canceled for May. His email address is listed below. Please, let him know that you would like to see the Wake Action Pistol League continue. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Eric Shuford’s email: [email protected]

sent this email today:

"Dear Mr. Shuford,

It has recently come to my attention that the Wake Action Pistol Matches held at the Wake County Firearms Education and Training Center are in jeopardy of cancellation.

I have attended these matches regularly for over a year and have found them to be extremely well run and safe.

Their cancellation would be travesty. I know that I am not alone in having a strong desire for the matches to continue.

Please continue to allow these matches to be run at WCFETC!

Please keep me updated on the situation.

Sincerely,"

Here is a reply I got. the weird symbols were in there and i'm too lazy to remove them.

Looks like they are "searching" for NRA instructors and a book of setups that can be run.

this is a bummer. How hard is it to become an NRA certified RSO?

"Hello Everyone,

I am writing this E-Mail to answer the many concerns about why the Action Pistol Matches held at the Wake County Firearms & Education Center have been temporally cancelled.

To introduce myself: My name is Fritz Rice and I am one of the three Managers of Range Safety Management which is responsible for the public operation of the Wake County Range.

Our/your range is owned by Wake County, a government owned facility, and was built to provide a safe place to enjoy shooting. Leagues were organized so people could compete in regard to their shooting interest. We have had Junior Rifle League for the beginning shooter, Ladies Handgun League, Bullseye Pistol League, Bench Rest Rifle League, Air Pistol League, Action Rifle League and Action Pistol League. Each league must have a certified NRA Range League Manager who must be on the range at all times and is responsible to insure all safety rules are followed. When using multiple ranges, beside the League Manager, a NRA Certified Range Officer must be available for each range.

Over the last 18 months or so, we, (RSM) and the WCSO Representative have been tightening up our documentation of those individuals using the range during other than Public Hours. This includes those that utilize the range for training and qualifications that fall under the management of RSM. This includes the individuals presenting their Certifications and Qualifications for Instructors, RSOs etc. This also includes Leagues that RSM is responsible for. All League Managers are Contractors for RSM and their certifications are on file.

Meanwhile, several safety concerns were receive from fellow shooters, along with some videos that prompted some questions about target placement, up-range movement and who are the ROs that are running the stages and what are their qualifications? All other Leagues utilize other RSM Contractors to help out when multiple ranges are used. Action Pistol has been the exception until these questions arose.

Eric Shuford, who is the Liaison to the WCSO, looked into the alleged problems and asked Scott to provide him, prior to each match, a range setup. (this had been asked for previously and was not provided) Scott provided the requested data for a while. Being responsible for all of the Leagues, I spoke with Scott, and he told me he had at least 50 setups. I asked him to provide me a copy of each set up, number each, to develop a play book, so when setting up each range he could refer to the play book advising a number for each setup. Ex: range 1 setup 33, range 2 set up 25, etc. That way I could view each and advise if I saw any safety issues.

The first April match was cancelled due to a scheduling error and the second April Match was cancelled due to Scotts failure to provide requested information for range setup and a list of all NRA Certified Range Officers that he intended to use. Scott agreed to provide me with the required documents so the June Matches could be held. Scott failed again to provide the requested information, instead he sent out an E-Mail to each of you and other members of the Action Pistol fraternity asking you to flood Eric Shufords mail with questions, on why the league was being cancelled.

Due to the above, Scotts position of League Manager has been terminated.

Now the league function has taken a step backwards, we dont have a league Manager nor do we have a list of the NRA Certified Range Officers or a play book for range setup. I would like to remind you that one warranted complaint regarding range safety could be the end to all our shooting. Therefore we must insure that we have in place all safety regulations and that they are properly monitored.

The main question is, when can we resume the Action Pistol League?

First off we need a person who has the interest and ambitions to be the Action Pistol League Director, who can prepare & organize the match functions and prepare a play book so management can pre-approve each match. Also, compile a list of all Range Officers and their Certifications. When our requests have been met and approved the matches may continue.

I would like to talk to anyone who would like to be the Manager for the Action Pistol League. My E-Mail address is [email protected]."

I have never shot the Wake County Match but if they are going to require an NRA certification for each bay it might be the end of that match. I was looking and it is easy to find a course for certification, one is offered in Sanford, but the cost is at$100 per head. Plus I am assume that the course focus's on the operation of a "square range" and not the action shooting sports.

If the Wake County Range would expand their list of qualifications allowed to certified SO's and RO's from IDPA and USPSA respectively they would probably be able to get enough volunteers. But by limiting it to NRA certification I do not think there are enough qualified individuals or individuals who are willing to obtain the certification to staff these matches. Plus, personally, I would feel more safe with an IDPA or USPSA qualified individual than with one with only a NRA certification.

I took the NRA RO course. Next to useless, imo. Never sent money in for certificate.

Seems like more a deal where you pay them money for the privilege of being called "NRA Certified". Meh.

I am a nra chief range safety officer, and can train others to be rso certified at only the cost of training materials and nra fees.. I've got to renew my certs soon, but I would be glad to help out any way possible. I like the wake matches, and I don't believe it would be too hard to make some concessions and meet the range requirements, while still shooting action pistol matches like we do now. If there is anyone who wants to head up efforts to get this all together, feel free to pm me and we'll work something out. I'd hate to lose these matches when the range has made very few requests so far.

Wake Co. CRSO's will be holding a class for the new match director's recruits once the deal is signed.

So those of us that have been ROing there for a long time will have to be NRA certified, will my IDPA certification not be enough, especially since its geared towards action shooting and not square range like NRA

Same. I took the class so I could RO these matches. The NRA RO program was a total joke.

I'm a NROI CRO, but I don't think that counts (even though it's a FAR better program).
