I have my eye on one of these but have a question or two..

First off...how ammy picky is it? I know they recommend HV ammo but what can yall tell me.

Secondly...anyone run a can on theirs? Kinda bounce back to the first question as only bein able to use HV ammo kinda negates the benefit of the barrel bein threaded.

Any other input would be appreciated.

I have the P22 3.4" pistol. For the first 300 rounds I experienced some of the same feed issues as I did with my Ruger 22/45. The ammo this gun likes is CCI mini-mag, CCI SV, Rem Golden Bullets, Win Super X. It does not like Fed Auto Match at all. (My son's SR22 does not like Auto Match either.)

Before you buy, check Remfire Central.com. There are a number of things to make the gun run more flawlessly. Example polishing the hammer, which seemed to slow down the action of the slide for feeding in some older guns.

Ours likes Mini Mags & the red or blue Fed bulk pack. American Eagle, not so much.

FWIW, a few of my 22s balk at Automatch. My Buckmark in particular seems to get gummed up by the lube n doesn't want to extract.

I have one I got new, shot it a little, and haven't touched for years. Nothing wrong with them, or it, but I like 22/45s better - shoot those all the time. Maybe I'll post it for sale soon - good reminder.

For all things 22, start your research at rimfirecentral.com like @Meckmeister suggested.

Had one. Great training tool. If you shoot most standard velocity rounds you'll get plenty of practice with FTF and FTE. Mine shot CCI Mini Mags very well.

There was an early mag issue as well, but long since resolved. The polishing of the hammer had to do with the hammer riding the underside of the slide and stuck a little as it went over the safety. Polishing and maybe a little rounding of the hammer face resolved this.

My honest opinion:
I bought one when new to guns because it looked "like a real gun" and I liked the P99 at that time. It was a decent gun that I sold for cheap. It was finicky and liked to be very clean to run.

I became serious about shooting and selling the P22 I used the money to buy a nice 4" slabside Mark3 22/45. I proceeded to put tens of thousands of rounds through the Ruger, prob over 40,00o now. It's a better gun in every way. More reliable, more accurate, nicer quality, better aftermarket support, etc.

Going to rimfire matches will quickly weed out guns that have a soft underbelly and you won't see a whole lot of these at rimfire matches, and I have never seen a top ten shooter use one. Not saying that means anything......but that means something.

IMO, save a little more money and buy a new Mark 4 22/45 like this:

http://www.ruger.com/products/markIV2245Tactical/specSheets/40149.html

OR, buy a lightly used Mark 2, Mark3, Browning Buckmark, or S&W Victory. Real target pistols designed to perform.

If wanting a gun more like the P22, I would buy the S&W MP22 or Ruger SR22 before buying the Walther. Just my opinions!

I can't speak about the P22, but when comparing my Buckmark, 22/45, and Walther PPQ .22 Tactical, the Walther is my favorite. It is really great with a TBAC .22 Takedown can too.

IMO the 5.5" Ruger 22/45, Buckmark/SW Victory (I just ordered one) are apples and oranges to the P22 and SR22 standard barrels. You can get a PPQ22, Ruger SR22 with extended barrels, and they run much better than the 3.4" cousins. The higher velocity in the longer barrels is a big plus for the .22 ammo it seems.

I've got a tricked out MkII & a Buckmark that wears a suppressor more often than not. To compare the P22 to the Ruger or Browning is ludicrous. Not even in the same league, quality-wise.

That said, ours was reasonably inexpensive when new, is reliable & accurate, and is what my wife & daughter learned to shoot with. Hell, the ol' lady shot her concealed carry course with it.

Need to get off my butt & order a barrel thread adapter, so I can start running it with the can.

Forgot about the PPQ .22
Wish I could have tried that when I was out at the farm!
