Does anyone have any suggestions for hotels in the area. Not wanting to be downtown necessarily just some where I can get close to the metro to go into town. My daughter wants to go see the stuff.

I try to avoid staying near DC, but I enjoy the Courtyard by Marriott that has the Gordon Biersch restaurant in it. The building is an old bank, and I used to frequent Gordon Biersch restaurants and beers when I lived on the West Coast. If you don't like beer I got nothing.

There is a Marriott property (I can’t remember if it’s a Residence Inn or one of the other lower tier ones) in Chinatown. Very easy walking distance to the Metro and close to the Verizon Center. We rode the Amtrak train up to DC then caught the Metro over to the Chinatown stop and could very easily walk to the hotel from there.

We had a friend recommend Ballston area. Does anyone know much about the area?

The Hilton Arlington looks like it's a possibility.

Do you need to have fast access to a certain area? What are you going for? To see the sights or something for business.

We are headed up to see the sights my daughter wants to see the Whitehouse and Lincoln memorial.

Ballston would be a good choice. I would try to stay on the VA side near a metro station. Wanna spend more money stay in the city but keep it NW. City will give you way more options for entertainment, restaurants, etc but you will spend more for it. Or try the new casinos and drive to a metro to see the sights. Then when you get back you have all the food, gambling and entertainment in one place.

Either way I would stick to the metro for museums and suck, parking is a huge pain.

I have stayed at both the nearby Hilton and Holiday Inn hotels. Ballston is a nice area, with a big shopping center and plenty of restaurants. The ride into DC from Ballston always seemed long to me; you had to take a long ride on the Orange Line or switch train line a couple of times. Glebe Road provides easy access to I-395.

However, my best recommendation for staying outside the District would be the Crystal City area of Arlington. Crystal City is over-run with good hotels, there is a huge underground shopping plaza that stretches out from the Crystal City Metro station, and the Yellow Line is super fast to the heart of touristy DC (3rd and 4th stops are, respectively, south and north of the Mall along 7th Street).

Not sure how long it takes but it is possible to request White House tours from your Congressperson. We got in on the first day they opened after the inauguration.

You're in for an unforgettable experience.

We got one so she is excited. Did I say she is a trump fan.
I'm remembering we also got a behind the scenes tour of Congress with one of our Representative's aids. Did you request that too?

We went up there last year for vacation and spent a week looking around. We stayed in Alexandria VA. We drove so I could at least have a weapon for the road. The metro was right outside our hotel. Only a few minutes by metro to be in DC. We spent the day in DC, then came back and ate and hung out in VA. If you are flying you can go to Reagan national (still in VA.) and take the metro back to Alexandria so you can travel with a gun.

I always stayed in Crystal City, plenty of nice hotels right near Metro.

Is it time?

So looks like it's going to be that Arlington Hilton which has a metro station pretty much across the street.
Is it time?

Is it time for her to go to DC? A resounding YES. My daughter is a true patriot in the works.

My wife is going to call them this week and see what else she can set up.

The guided Capital tour is amazing. The regular touristy one. Not sure the price, I went with my daughters school. But the guides are phenomenal. WWII memorial was very nice. Wish we had more time in the Museums.

when i was in DC for work, i stayed in Springfield, VA, which is at the end of the Metro line.
had my choice of seats going into DC. leaving, i was already one hour (by car) out of DC.

And if you are going through Quantico the Marine Corp Museum is worth a stop. Some very cool stuff in there and a lot of the volunteers are older vets.

We always stay downtown -the Capitol Hilton is nice (and we use Honors Points to keep the rate low) and right where you can pretty much walk everywhere. When we go, we probably walk 20 miles totalmaking laps of the entire Mall and hitting the National Archives, the monuments, and the Smithsonian museums.

There is a Courtyard next to the Pentagon that I can usually find for less than $150 a night (sometimes like $125). The problem is that if you have a car, you'll be paying $40 a day to park. But if you are flying or getting off the train, it is a good choice. Also, it is right next to the metro line to easily get around the city. If you are driving and don't want to pay to park, I usually stay at the Courtyard in Rockville, MD and drive the 20 min into the city. Not much for less than $300 inside the beltway, especially during the work week.

We are driving up Friday morning and back Sunday morning so just a short trip.
Don't want to be a wise guy, please double check your car has NO AMMO, no spend casee, shotgun hulls, a bullet or a primer in it,
DC law considers any and all components of ammunition to be ammunition, live or spent. Unless you have a FOID card they will arrest you
if they see any of the above during a traffic stop or checkpoint, they target out of state vehicles.

Get a rental. Preferably, one with out of state tags, like MA. ;)
