Have a quick trip planned (1 overnight) to Washington, NC and looking for a “cant miss” eatery…. Lunch and dinner only; BBQ or a decent mom & pop place

Thanks!

Check out the original Bills HotDogs on Gladden St. Been around forever, great hotdogs!

Also King Chicken, been there 70 years or so, Awesome fried chicken!

I recommend King Chicken, and their chicken and cheese biscuit. I also recommend, Down On Mainstreet, I like their burgers and sandwiches.
There are 2 Bill's Hot Dogs, go to the one located here, 109 Gladden St, Washington, NC 27889.

I can’t recall the name of it, but there Is a real good EthiopIan restaurant in Crystal City I’ve been to a couple of times. It’s in a Olea a near a bunch of defense contractor companies, like General Dya I’ve s d others, but damn if I can find it on google maps. It’s been 15+ years since ive been there, though.

To be honest, Washington NC is pretty skimpy with good places to eat. Local stuff has been mentioned, Bill's hot dogs. King Chicken, Down on Main is too loud for my taste, but that's me. The Hitchin Post in Williamston is pretty good, and not too far from Washington, about a 30 minutes drive up 17N. By far the best place in the area is Martelle's but that's on the far end of Hyde County. But if you go there, you can stop and pick me up on the way. :)

Thanks to all. Daughter and I staying there as a landing spot to go fossil hunting in Aurora, so it’s really just a place to crash. Local food is a big plus after the drive and long day hunting.

Take photos of your fossil hunting.
Have fun.

Are you going fossil hunting at PCS, or whatever it is called now? With a group? I would like to go back.

I went with the Charlotte Gem and Mineral Club years ago and had a blast. They took us into the facility on old school buses, packed 3 adults to a seat with all our gear. Once we got to the location, we had to stop at a tent and sign out a signal flare, to use if we got caught in quick sand. I still have boxes full of fossil marine mammal bones, huge shells and a lot of small sharks teeth.

If you're going that way, Charlies in Bayboro used to be very good. New Bern has a lot of places, but they've all changed since I was there.

Thanks to all.

We’re digging at the Aurora Fossil Museum. The mine dumps fresh material a couple times/year. We’re just hopeful to get some teeth and whatever else we can find.

I think I read that the mine operation may have closed to fossil hunters, but I could be mid-remembering that.

IMO, stay away from Bill's Hotdogs. Nastiest things I have tried to eat.

King's chicken is take out only, I believe.

Boss Hog's BBQ was awful.

Skylight Inn has had the best BBQ that've ate lately. Haven't been to B's in 25 years.

Good luck. Eat before you get to Aurora

was there with my grandson last week he found a nice Mako shark tooth

When you are in Aurora hit up Wayside.... it isn't the best but good for what it is!

Plenty of new /nice places in downtown Washington...
Hackney, The Bank , Mulberry ,Parleys Sip and Stem ,Le Blue Farm to Table.... Bacjwater Jacks is a good one....a few other places that are hit/miss Grub Brothers Sheps...all the chain restaurants.

Also the short way through Chocowinity is closed you have to take the big bridge over the river for now.

@RacerX I'll be home Friday afternoon if your hunt turns up dry let me know...I have a few from when I worked on site....some you can have a few you can look at but are staying lol. I have two large vertebrae and a chunk of petrified wood that are look /see only :).

And yes noone is allowed on site any longer to dig.

@Mike79 thank you for the offer! We’re here tonight, digging again tomorrow then rolling back to WF.

This is what we found after an hour of digging tonight. Well ID them tomorrow.

I made these with some scrap 2x4s and 1/4” screen.

When we went into PCS, I remember one wall of a dug out area was solid scallop and clam shells that were about 6-8" diameter and stacked about 20' deep.

I was able to take my boys, when they were younger, to the Giant Cement Company in Harleyville, SC, and we found hundreds of sharks teeth.

We had a great time today! Maybe 4 hrs of digging yielded a pile of teeth. Aside from a couple school field trips‘ kids trying to use our sifters and shovels (hard “No, please don’t touch those tools” and they wandered away), it was awesome.

Just back from another quick, overnight in Washington for the Aurora Fossil Museum

Helped close Backwater Jacks for the season last night with a massive plate of shrimp!

Spent maybe 4-5hrs between yesterday and today at the museum with some great results.

Bought these in the gift shop. Technically, they were closed but offered their restrooms and to sell us stuff while they did maintenance around the shop.

1 GW tooth (broken at gum line) and 1 Mako tooth. I’d rather not be at the business side for either of these meat eaters!!
