Ok guys I'm looking for a water filter setup for the house. Not sure where to start looking. Any suggestions?

I see the small camping style filter systems but I don't think it would last long if say I didn't have power for a few weeks.

Also I'm working on getting a generator but it's a while off....

I like the Sawyer-mini for a small one. If you take the time to back-flush it is supposedly good for 100,000 gallons.

Longevity is not an issue for the small ones nowadays. But convenience is. For our house we got the Berkey Light with lots of spare parts and filters.

I wanted the metal one, but my wife wanted to be able to see the fill chamber. And she is in charge of food and beverage for the most part.

Except peaty Scotch. You don't let her handle that do you? :D

I like the Lifestraw Family 1.0 for a not so portable option. It is a gravity fed filter. Supposedly good for like 4,700 gallons, which they claim is 3 years for 5 people.

That or get the Sawyer Mini and make it an inline filter. There are villages that use them that way. I think that is actually one of the ways they tested them for their 100,000 gallon claim.

We have a Berkey that gets used daily. The wife fills a water bottle every morning before work and I use it to filter our well water for the Keurig. Keeps the filter on the Keurig from clogging up.

How do u back flush the filter? Just put water backwards through it?

Thanks! I just ordered this and a mini Sawyer kit. I think that should cover my needs :) thanks guys!!
I also saw on Youtube where you can use a Smartwater bottle with the sport cap to back flush. The threads are also the same so you can use any water or 20 oz soda bottle as the dirty side to fill up from a stream and squeeze it instead of the bladder it comes with. I'm taking mine camping in a couple weeks, my plan is to use the bladder for the dirty side and a smartwater bottle as the clean side and to back flush. Lots of options with the Sawyer mini. If it works well it will permanently replace my $90 MSR sweetwater pump style filter. For as cheap as they are you can have one in every vehicle, bag, etc...I have seen them for sale in walmart as well in camping section, so you don't have to order them to get them.

Dale,

there's a way to make the mini a bit more practical than fill the bag and squeeze. More akin to a MSR/Katadyne pump system.
it takes a hand pump like this one for $7 https://www.harborfreight.com/multi-use-transfer-pump-63144.html

you can even add a carbon element to the outflow if you want absolute pure tasting water. The sawyer won't take out all taste.
$20 https://www.amazon.com/Platypus-Gravityworks-Carbon-Element/dp/B007X3J5QM

Anyhow, you can top it off with adding a pressure washer pickup hose filter and check valve and you've built a Katadyn vario for half price and better filtration (IMO) at .1 micron vs .2 for the vario (plus it's expensive to rebuild)

This can be hooked directly up to a camelbak type bladder so you can pump directly into a go back with said bladder. VERY nice.

I love the Vario. But I can't put one in each go bag at this price point. I have 5 bags to pack.

With all that being said there is a new filter on my radar that approaches the cost of the above setup, and may be a better solution as an all in one.
