I can't get a break I tell ya!

Just paid off the truck 2 years early. Car's been paid off for 5 years. We don't carry more than one loan at any one time. I would like to save up for a few years.

Wife takes off to do some shopping. Calls about 20min after leaving. Car over heated. Told her I'll be right there, grab 2gal of water and I'm off. Plan was to swap vehicles.

Get there it's almost out of fluid, none on the ground. Fill it up, burp it and I drive home, no issues.

Back into the garage and wait.... Yup, slow leak from the water pump area. Look with a light and I see fluid below the pump, plus metal shavings.

Guess what I'll be doing this weekend?

Water pump is not difficult to replace on some vehicles. Did it on a couple Jeeps I have had. But those engine compartments are sized to fit a Chevy 350 or other after market engine swap.

I've done my share of pumps. Summer heat to 10" of snow and piling up. It's just one thing after another.

This one is really squeezed in there. Researched the cost, $350-$450 Guess I'll be doing this myself, thank you.

While I'm in the neighborhood going to replace the timing belt.

I once replaced a water pump on a '68 Bonneville halfway between Kingman & Seligman, AZ. Hitched into Kingman, bought a water pump & a gallon of antifreeze; hitched back & dug around in the trunk for tools.

Had one wrench - 1/2" one end, 9/16" on the other. Used a dime for a screwdriver on the hose clamps. Drove back to the parts house & got my core deposit.

Hope your repair doesn't involve hitch hiking.

My '99 Taurus 3.0 had water pump leak, darn pump had two weep holes, weird. You can't see the lower weep hole. Swapped it out in under 2 hours, a personal best, had to get to Ham Radio Field Day that morning. New pump has just one weep hole.

Ever replace broke valve springs using old yellow ski rope instead of air? Done many beside the road in just a few minutes. But lord I can’t imagine on these new cars.
I call BS. Your cars still had stone wheels. Oh, that's @fieldgrade.

Decided to push through to complete this. Water pump/belt is done. I didn't put the air cleaner on because...

After lunch I'm finally going to do the intake manifold to replace the check valve mishmash of a fix that's been working great since the Rona started.

The only other thing I have to say is to use quality parts.

Lifetime warranty does not necessarily mean quality parts. Sometimes paying the extra for OEM is the way to go.

The point being that your time is worth a lot of money and that lifetime warranty doesn't mean as much if you end up spending another entire day replacing something you just replaced a year earlier.

That said... congratulations on a job well done!
