Weekly snake thread

i double checked and made sure there were no snakes before i moved to clemmons - so, sorry i wont be contributing to this thread.
Was there any chuckling or snorting right after you signed the contract?

not really - but they did ask if i was interested in some beachfront property in another state. i told them i thought arizona might be too hot for my taste. plus im pretty sure they have rattlesnakes there.

I have been reading this thread. Very interesting. I think I became confused. Here is what I thought I was seeing.

just how does someone talk you into looking at their penis? I could really use this on my wife.

One whack behind the head with a flexible garden stick, ya know, the green plastic coated rod ya use to hold up mater plants?

To quote Brian Williams (disgraced NBC news anchor) I think I conflated those threads!!

There's always Ireland as a back up.

This guy was cruising from the barn toward the coop the other night. The wife redirected him with a rake and sent him on his way away from the pets.

Our 15+ year old barn cat finally expired and now we have some mice running around, and of course the snakes show up to eat them. Just eat and move along.

Black racer.

Just checked it this morning... looks like the antifreeze soaked right through the skin, and it has left a sheen, kinda like varnish or linseed oil. I didn't touch it to see if it's hardening, but I'm sure it will. I also expect it to be very flexible when it's done drying.

Right now it looks like what you get when you cure a rabbit skin with a power washer and an egg yolk. Kinda a thin sheen.
You could have taken pic of this process and let us all in on the process. Ahem.

At the Hammer house, if'n it slithers, it dies! Hate a snake! Had one living in the house for years! I think I've got another one.

My cat was getting worked up about something. She seemed to be focused on the location for a bit, longer than a mouse would stay put with a killer feline stalking it so I decided to check it out.

It was a snake. A garter snake for sure, but over two feet long and in the house.

Where it was made it next to impossible to grab it and evict it manually. Plus it was getting agitated and aggressive. I didn't feel like getting an infection.

I had a Super Blackhawk .44 Mag. handy. I didn't have lead bullets in it. They were the plastic ones. Reusable plastic case with a reusable plastic projectile. No powder at all, just push a primer into the case at one end and the projectile onto the other end.

It made quickly work of him for sure, but even though it was just a primer going off, I should have used hearing protection. Fired indoors, it was loud!

next time, just roll some moth balls in where he's hiding... he'll come out!

Then, ya grab him by the tail, an' if'n he tries to curl up to bite ya, jus' duck 'im up an' down, an' 'is own weight will keep him away.

Here is the Antifreeze Cured Snakeskin, just before the third application of brushed on Antifreeze.
What's notable is that the color comes through nearly totally!
Yer lookin' at the inside...

When I'm done treating it with Antifreeze, I think I'll dust it with diatomaceous earth.

Always leave a mousetrap by yer curing snakeskin, so's ya don' get extry holes in it.

Settin' under a fan all night long... the Antifreeze cure has set up a little rubbery, not sticky. Might be close to time to sprinkle diatomaceous earth on it.

Hey Mac, what does the DE do to it, drying agent?

Thanks fellas, I'm always up for learning a new trick. I used it as a filtering media when I worked at a waterplant as well. It's good stuff.

I couldn't find me Diatomaceous Earth, so I dusted it with grindin's from hollowin' out a Texas Long Horn to make a powder horn. It worked, an' I think any dry powder would do the trick.

Anyway, the skin turned out very well! It's soft, just like it was when it was on the snake. It's not dry or brittle. Here's the outside, all done, after preservin' with antifreeze and dustin' with Texas Long Horn:

I'm thankin' 'bout stitchin' that skin around a piece o' foam, so's it'll look like a taxiderrmy snake, but no head.
I've always wanted to do that, but they have always been too brittle.
This'n is gonna be the best!

You were shootin' guns in the house!?

That's awesome.

LOL!

When our friendly felines brought home the fleas, my wife found DE on the internet. She wanted a good deal, so she bought in bulk.

She had a 50lb bag delivered.

We've had to dust the house twice since then, and given some to others in the same boat. That was about 5 years ago.

We're running pretty low, probably have only about 47lbs left.

Can also use DE in yer pets' food to kill intestinal parasites. Also works a treat for insect control in yer yard &/or garden.

Folks, I've got several 10 lb bags of the stuff!
Just cain't find it nowheres, tha's all!

I like the idear of puttin'a GI Joe head on the hatband!

Yeah, I've always used salt to cure a snakeskin... done lots of 'em all me life!
But they always end up dry and brittle, losin' scales an' ya gotta oil 'em to keep 'em goin'.
This antifreeze method turns it inta a whole different thang!

Huge banded water snake coming out of the pond the same moment a red eared slider was digging a hole to lay eggs

So I was out digging taters and came upon these funny looking ones. Slightly smaller than golfballs, maybe 8" underground. Counted 3 buried 'em back.

Good idea to bury 'em back... all vipers give birth to live young.

(therefore, those in the eggs you found are good'uns...)

5 rounds of 12g birdshot. Empty the magazine, always. I don't take chances with copperheads.

I normally use my pocket knife. Step on the head and then cut it off. Or a big dang rock, a shotgun, hoe, pickaxe, maccett, truck, etc etc. What ever happens to be around ;)

Never used fire..... Hmmmmmm maby next time :D

I was gonna drop the scrape blade on him, but he got away too quick.

I saw the smallest snake I've ever seen yesterday while mowing. I first thought it was a worm but as not and dry as it has been I took a second look. I didn't have anything to take a picture but it was roughly 6" long, smaller in diameter then a pencil. If this thing could get its mouth around a pea I would have been impressed. I made a number of passes on the mower trying to figure out what it would eat being so small. It was a black color with a bit of a blue hue to it. Seemed harmless so I got him out of the way and kept going.
