Weekly snake thread

Assuming that "Pineland" means you live in E. NC (there is no town called Pineland in NC) that snake is in the wrong place!

It looks like a Queen Snake, but they live in mountain and piedmont streams and eat crayfish.

It's a male.

I'm pretty sure Sdiver2006's snake is a yellow rat snake. Good to have around to keep the mice/rat population under control.

That’s what it is....he/she has been around for a bit, lives in the area between my fence and shed where my Jeep lives in the winter..It has kept the bugs away

I inherited a female border collie mix from my dad. Well, sometime Wed night she tried to take on a rattler and paid the price. When I saw her Thursday morning her head was twice it’s normal size. She was bitten inside the mouth. She’s still at the vet after a few doses of antivenin and the swelling hasn’t gone down yet but she is stable. I didn’t think she would make it through Thursday night.

I had a 5 foot Black snake hanging around my my pool 2 days ago. I took him way down in the woods and deposited him near the creek. I hope he stays because his next trip up will result in a beheading. My 15 month old grandson plays out there.

I dread that with my border collie. So far she’s been sprayed by a skunk and that’s it but she’s never seen a snake or a coyote yet. Good luck to your dog on her recovery

Lmao. Black snakes are harmless and if a 15 month old gets bitten by a snake someone wasn’t doing their job .

One day last week I’m out in the shop, the three lady folks are doing whatever they are doing in the house. Younger daughter comes out and says with urgency that they’ve been screaming for me, come now! So inside we go and I look out the window at the front of the house.

Last year we had a similar black snake on the porch and I was required to kill it, I was expecting the same. I was happily surprised that they were happy with letting it be, that it wasn’t hurting anything.

We’ve had voles come through the flower beds and dig along the side of the house, my guess is that it was either cruising for tunnels or had spent some time checking out the crawlspace.

had spent some time checking out the crawlspace.

That's where mine live year around but can come and go through the foundation vents, cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. I don't think they even hibernate because I can find them every time I go under the house.

We’ve got a few feet cleared between the house and the bushes, and this is the first black snake we’ve seen in that space, so I doubt they are living under there. I’ll ask the termite guy when he goes down their next week.

Careful doing that, I mentioned Blackie being under the house to a Spectrum cable guy one day and he packed up his tools and left. Spectrum called me later and rescheduled 2 days later with another tech... Not that I missed cable for 2 days....

Good point, I’ll be sure to ask at the end of the day!

RIP buddy. Just let all three dogs out to roam for a while as I enjoy some cold beer on the porch. Wife says “there’s a not so friendly looking snake over there in the driveway”. The Judge gets another notch.

I really do not know my snakes except I know this one WAS bad.
Need to ID the snakes that you post.

Black rat snakes can get even bigger. They are real impressive when they get up around 8' long. We had one here, but I haven't seen it in a few years.

I went out to see how the creek at the edge of the back woods was flowing after our rain and made it about 3 steps into the woods before I saw a small copperhead on the path down there. We looked at each other for a few min, then I decided to look at the creek a bit later.

An hour later, he was gone, and I suspect is living under the brush pile I saw him next to.

I was looking pretty carefully where I put my feet on the 2nd trip.

If any of you ever have an abundance of Cicadas molting in your yards this time of year, be on the lookout for copperheads also. It’s their favorite food

I didn't know that!
