I’ve struggled with falling and staying asleep for years. It’s nothing for me to wake up 15 or so times a night. This is a common problem in the fire service. I’ve tried different things and never really found anything that helped. Last month My wife got me a 17lbs weighted blanket for our anniversary. I was pretty skeptical at first but heck it couldn’t hurt. I don’t know that I’ve ever slept so good as an adult. So if you struggle like I did this might be worth a try!

I’m the same, I can’t stay asleep anymore. I’m awake 5-10 times a night. I’ve been very curious about these blankest. How long have you been using it?

We used a weighted blanket with my oldest kid for years. Many folks with a sensory processing disorder use them.

I'm curious, when you were younger, did you find things like a light touch or showers on your face, anything to do with touch a problem? For example, my kid would struggle and fuss with a "normal" hug, but if you gave him a big freaking squeeze of a bear hug he'd love it.

Nah I didn’t. I’m a fireman and between the getting up god knows how many times at all times of the night for the past 18 yrs and the mental trauma of seeing messed up stuff , sleeping problems are very common in emergency services. I do see how these would calm autistic or other sensory sensitive children or adults.

I've been using one since April. I sleep much more soundly with fewer interruptions.

Years back as a kid when we’d go stay with Grandma and Grandpa over Christmas break (back when it actually started getting cold around State Fair time) we’d sleep under two old style quilts because the upstairs of the farmhouse got so cold. Once G-ma threw those quilts over you it was hard to move from the weight ... I’d guess 5 lbs a piece. I always thought we slept well because it was so quiet, the air was so clean and crisp, we were so tired from messing around the farm or some other country reason but maybe it was the weight?

Anyway if it works don’t ask why ... just enjoy!

The best sleep I can ever remember was under 3 or 4 blankets during snow storms. My bedroom was the corner of the house and would catch all the wind from the storms. It was consistently 10 degrees colder than the house and we had big ole blankets.

This is interesting, my wife sleeps quite poorly.
Even though she’s always hot, our bed has a sheet, thick comforter (I see where the name came from) and a heavy dust cover.
The glass beads should help a lot with the heat.

No. It’s actually pretty thin. It’s weighted around the edges so it’s no thicker than normal. Feels like lead shot ( I’m sure it’s not lead lol) or something in it seen in small pouches. They actually make ones for warm weather.

How come I never heard of these?

Since the surgeries and all the chemo, I've never been able to sleep more than a few hours at a time. I used to be able to do 10 hours without moving, so you can imagine how only being able to do about 4 at a time feels! I have to try this! Thanks.

(Or maybe get a fat guy to throw a leg over me? LOL.)

@Millie, I have a weighted blanket that I don’t use very often. If you would like it, I’ll bring it to the Meet and Greet in October or if you need it before I ship it if you’d PM me your address. It’s less than a year old and probably only been used a few times.

It's readily apparent how these blankets work.

I guess it makes sense. We were in the womb for 9 months.. we came into existence being surrounded with correct pressure and nurtured after birth with properly swaddled blankets. It must have something to do with it.

I have noticed that in the summer time I do not sleep as well because we get rid of the big comforter. I can remember staying at my Paw-Paw's house and my Dad's old room had a tanned deer throw that was soft and heavy. Slept like a rock.

I think I might look into this and get something because waking up every hour on the hour is really tiring.

I think I need one of these. During the winter, I'll have 3-4 thick blankets on my bed, and I sleep a lot better under the weight. In the summer, its one thin blanket and a sheet, and sleeping is a struggle.

I've never slept great. I get what I call "busy brain" at night, where the body may be tired, but the mind is wide awake. Mornings tend to be the reverse of that.

I dream multiple dreams each night that wake me. I usually wake up two times a night. I also have trouble breathing during sleep. When I read this thread I attempted to remember the last time I slept solid thru the night. It was when I was under all the layers of the bed. I may get one of these blankets. It must be the sense of being held much like a child falls asleep while being held. Plus it’s less likely to allow tossing around during the night.

There is a good bit of science behind why they work.

Deep pressure (like a hug) releases serotonin and dopamine. The "feel better" neurotransmitters.

Melotonin is synthesized in your pineal gland from serotonin.

    Melotonin makes you sleepy......

Interesting thread. I use a sheet for cover and I am up at least 5 times per night.
I should consider this weighted blanket but I will be concerned if it traps the heat.

My blanket will arrive in a bit, and I can't wait to see how I sleep tonight. It will be interesting to hear how the blanket does for you guys, too.

(Or we can all get a fat person to hug us/hold us down as we sleep, I guess??)

They have ones for warm weather. Mines fairly thin. The weight comes from the glass beads or whatever it is they weight them with. The rest of the blanket is light weight.
