I assume that noboby here is in this predicament, but maybe so.

I'm wondering if it is possible for husband and wife to establish residence in two different states, respectively.

Here's the scenario....
She establishes residence in **, which saves us a bunch in property taxes (non residents pay a lot more).

I remain as a resident of *** to keep vehicles registered in *** to save on vehicle taxes and insurance, avoid form 1 changes, simplify a planned retirement "salary" income tax filing.

I've calculated the savings, and it's not minor. Estimated at $2400 per year, pretty big when basically retired.

We will have homes in both states, so that's covered.

Can't figure out why this wouldn't be possible.

I had a slightly similar situation. I worked in VA, while we still claimed residence in NC. She worked in NC. I filed taxes in both states. That would be my guess as to how that impacts you. I can’t recall if on the tax program when I did them earlier this year it asked if both of us lived at the same place more than six months. If you have an old tax program you may be able to experiment.

I am not aware of any need for spouses to live in the same residence.

Now that I think of it, I had a coworker who lived in NC and her husband lived in OH. Both had residences and both sent kids to local schools.

I think you would have to file separate tax returns, as you both would be based in different states.

You should look at filing a trust in Montana and registering your vehicles. Lots and lots of folks that own big RV's do this and save big $$. Might work in your situation as well.
