There was a country store with a gravel "lot" a couple of miles from the house, where we did stuff like that. We would say, "Set it down." He would scribble on the blotter on the counter at the register. I later found out he had gone to Erskine College in Due West. He was a great guy. I miss that old store. Wooden floor, pot-bellied stove with old men sitting around telling lies, er, I mean, dispensing wisdom, old air compressor under the porch roof for folks to get air in their tires. He'd come out and pump your gas. You could buy kerosene there too. Old wooden benches outside under the porch roof. Buy a slice of cheese off the wheel or a chunk of baloney...I have an Aunt that I love dearly. We were raised like brother and sister. I found out recently she was driving 11 miles to grocery shop at a discount store. I reminded her that when we were kids, 60 or so years ago, we could run into Berry's Red and White on main street [1/2 mile from her present house] get stuff we Needed and sign for it on the back of a paper bag with our "bill" on it. My grandfather would go into town on Saturdays and Square Up with Mr. Burt. I asked her to try that the next time she drove past where the Red&White used to be.
I'm just too old and one way to drive 22 miles to save 5 damn dollars....Old man story Over.....
