Went to my local LGS to talk about shooting lessons for the daughters BF. I've avoided it for a few weeks cause each time the line for the range was out the door and they were limiting people inside. Today was different. Notables:

-Ammo (other than 9mm) was plentiful
-Decent selection of handguns (mostly Rugers, S&W), 5 Sigs (2 P210s), a few HKs, Glocks and CZs
-Good selection of long guns, esp 5.56 and 7.62 variants (pistols to long guns)options
-Pre-owned went the gambit from Ruger to race guns -and quite a few Wilson 1911s

Here is what's different from the last few times I was there: no line for the range, but the firearm purchase line was out the door. The greeter said its been like this for the last 2weeks. Its been seriously crowded there for the last few months, but according to him, most purchases were handguns and shotguns. Vast majority of purchases now is any type of rifle, with shotguns flying off the shelf. Obviously no need for CCW or PPP makes it easier. While in line for retail, I heard more than a few people say/asking, "I can return this, right?". Shock and awe when they were told, nope.

Clerk mentioned he can't wait until a few months after the election when some of these newly purchased firearms hit the discounted 'pre-owned' rack.

Picked up my limit on 45ACP and 5.56, got info on lessons, and wandered for a while.

IMHO, these LGS should hold a 'first time buyer seminar', so new/prospective purchasers can better understand what they are getting into, and the rules and regulations.

Fuquay Gun and Gold back in March when all this started had a sales rep at door asking people if this was their first time buying. They had salespeople trying to help them and teach them some, eventually got to the point the number of people buying outweighed what they could do to assist. They still tried to the best of their abilities, but a lot of people in their you could tell had no clue what they were doing. Between not knowing you needed a permit to buy a pistol to how to properly load their newly purchased firearm. Some didn’t want to admit their reasoning for buying to the salesman, one saying they were going hiking soon and wanted a shotgun for defense against bears. As soon as salesman walked away, they were talking about which one would be better inside their house

I’m just wanting to be able to go back to walking into a store and finding some decently priced 380 so I can get my wife comfortable with the G42

Cool
Since you don’t list a location, which LGS did you visit?

If the store handed out a printed sheet to the people in line, they’d save a lot of time (and half the people would leave when they realize they’d need a Permit).

Genius!

I was killing a few minutes in Cabelas the other day and noticed a fellow speaking with a clerk about some short barreled shotguns they had. I wasn't intentionally listening but as I walked by I heard the potential buyer state that if bought a shotgun he'd be able to return it later to which the clerk firmly stated no. I'm just surprised that so many seem to have done absolutely no research before stepping into a gun store.

I actually kinda view this as a good thing. Work with someone who mentioned a month or two ago they wanted to go buy a pistol and an AR before the election. Told them good luck, he is still grumbling about how long it took to get his PPPs from the Wake Sheriff, that he had to get a permit in the first place, couldn't find what he was looking for, how expensive it was, couldn't find ammo, etc.

A lot of people are getting misconceptions shattered the hard way.

It shows them how unbelievably ridiculous the laws they voted for are. Maybe it’ll wake them up, who knows can’t expect much at this point
And if you notice this happening, point it out to them. Don't expect the brain dead to put two and two together to get four.
Some will need a calculator, tutor , paper and their phone.

Why would they research? They have been told how easy it is to get guns for years. I wonder how many left the LGS with no permit and went to stand on a street corner! everyone knows you can buy cheap handguns on any street corner!!!!

We get a bunch at every show that have been “researching” online and come in to see and handle in person with zero intent to buy. Also get a lot of ladies looking for their first gun because the local stores won’t spend any time with them.

I recognize and appreciate newbies-heck each one of us was one at some point. I do find myself a bit irritated when I'm in line behind someone who needs help filling out the form. I do figure if ya can't read the form, maybe a gun buy isn't your first move!

I also find myself frustrated just simply for the lines. I have suggested to more than one shop that they should have a first time buyers line and an old, curmudgeons buyers line.

You sure that was guns??

 Don't get me started.
You scare me sometimes when you get started. A compliment to you is you probably know more about guns than 95% of the clerks in most of the big box stores like Academy etc. The ladies that come to us and other show dealers are much better off than listening them anyway

Dude, are you ok? You're complimenting me, which is SO not normal.....I'm a little worried right now. Have the gf take your temp, ok? Let me know what it says.😲

I had to learn the hard way about clerks and guns for women. LoL.
As I have about most things in life, I admit....

Don't tell any one that is it not normal for me to be nice. I got most of them fooled!

And by definition the old crumudgeons would refuse to use that line, spend 20 minutes complaining about one of the questions on the form, or how prices have gone up way too much compared to what they were 20 years ago.

Just out of curiousty is a local local gun store twice as local?

No. They just numb your wallet. Gotta watch out for those local general gun stores. You'll go in, and wake up on some nameless hill in Vietnam before you realize it.
