My son plays Xbox one. I plan on getting the newest Xbox when the new battlefield comes out. Is the series X newer then the S? I tried looking at them but they seem more confusing then the PlayStation as the are so many options. Why such a dramatic cost difference? I see some for $499 and some for $899 and they seem to have the same thing.

Series S is older. Has no disc drive. So have to purchase games solely online and play with an online connection since you don't have physical disc.
The X is newer better faster, more expensive. But at least they appear in stock. For a while they were hard to come by and some people would buy them just to resell for more money

The Series X is the best version of the Xbox out. The Series S will play the same games but is less powerful. The newest series of consoles (Xbox and PlayStation) are crazily priced because of system shortages. They can be though to find and have been that way since their launch. The MSRP is $500 for the Series X.

Prices are crazy because of, well, the same reasons everything else is crazy right now!

Also watch the HD size on the new gen...my understanding is that most external HDs aren’t fast enough to run some of the new games. These next Gen games aren’t going to be small either! They can be stored on those ”slower” externals, but have to be transferred to the internal to actually play them (not a huge problem, but it is extra steps). The Xbox add on HDs that can run the games are expensive for what they are. There may be other externals that will work, but likely aren’t “approved” by the Microshort overlords! 🧐

My understanding anyway...someone may have more details or will surely correct me shortly! 😬

What makes it confusing is that there is an Xbox One S. That is not the same as Xbox Series S

Xbox series X is the newest and best. Series S is a lesser version.

X has a 1TB hard drive, S has 512MB. X has more processing power and can do true 4k resolution. What was most important for us is that the X has a disc drive, so if you are also using your Xbox as your Blu-Ray/DVD player then you will want an X. The smaller hard drive is significant too since memory expansion is stupid expensive for this platform. The proprietary memory expansion is $200ish for 1TB.

Our old USB memory expansion still plays the lower resolution (Xbox One) games, but won't play the games optimized for X/S. It will still store them so that they can be moved to the console to play though.

Chip shortages have impacted availability. I was lucky in that I pre-ordered last year before Christmas and got mine in time for regular MSRP.
