What Did You Do In The Garage Today?

Reprofiled my lawn mower blades today. Why, you may ask?

Some genius at Ariens/Gravely thought it was a good idea to build a zero turn mower with a timed deck instead of a vbelt driven offset staggered deck. So every time I strike something hard with a blade, it jumps time and then starts to beat the everliving hell out of each other 1 inch from the end of the blade.

I have rebuilt this deck at least twice and replace 2 ALUMINUM spindles that have cracked due to this issue.

Also had the Briggs 17HP single load up on fuel and blow the head gasket. A bit of sandpaper lapping, a new gasket, and some copper gasket spray and she runs like new.

All in all this POS has been worth the 5 hunnit I paid for it used 6 years ago [emoji23]

Speaking of mowers. I added side facing lights to help in navigating around obstacles while mowing after sunset - the only time I can find time to mow lately. That front light is a beast.

Well Friday I put new front brake pads and rotors on the wife's Expedition and noticed that the upper ball joints were slightly worn. Ordered new upper control arms and lower ball joints for it. Gave it a buff job today and it sure is standing tall. Wife promised me a buffing in return....

Replaced a/c low side hose that had small leak at barb the other day, vacuumed and recharged, nice and cold.

Other car had loose Schrader valve at low port, topped it off, cold.

Got one side of the garage cleaned up enough for my wife to park her car. We moved in last Saturday so it is a mess. Hoping to start a workbench/storage project on the other side to make room for my cj-7.

Wife's '05 Pilot was making a little noise when turning. It has just over 150K. Bought two 12oz bottle of Honda specific PS fluid and a $2 turkey baster. Original fluid was about the color of a Coke...while new stuff is closer to Sprite.

Suctioned out what was in the reservoir, filled it back up, rode around the neighborhood making a bunch of turns...and then repeated that two more times. Hoping that's all it is. (Thats how I quieted down my '03 Ram a couple years ago)

If that does not work those are known for developing air leaks on the suction side of the pump. Simply remove the metal inlet that the hose hooks to and replace the o ring. The suction side is the hose comming from the fluid container . As long as it is not leaking p/s fluid this should fix it.

I saw discussion around replacing the o-ring when I was checking online. Just never watched any of the videos. Thanks for the heads up!

Haven't seen any fluid leaking anywhere.

New ball joints, upper control arms and 4 shocks for the wife's Expedition. Alignment this afternoon and then it should be ready to take on our vacation.

Just spent a bunch of money having the A/C redone in my '97 Tahoe. Was thinking of selling it but it's in too good of shape to let go. It's worth more to me than I'd get for it. Anyhow, I treated it to a new set of shoes. Found someone with a set of 18" Chevy rims with Nitto Terra Grappler tires for $400. Couldn't pass it up. I think she turned out nice. Now I need to work on the paint and some other minor issues. I'm thinkin' a 3" lift might be in order. Opinions?

Cussed.
I cussed when I realized I was, literally, 1/4 mile from HF and forgot to go by after dinner to get that rivet gun that I posted in another thread about.

Changed out the master cyclinder and two brake lines today. The brake lines sucked cuz the part stores didn't have the length I needed, so I got them 10" longer and had to bend a helical coil to get the right fit. Anyway, that's done.

Oh, 2000 Buick Park Ave. Got it for free. Had a few issues and some rust (northern car) but free is free.

I broke into a small vault.

Got this double door cash vault from work. It's still theirs, I'm going to sell it and give the money back to work to do something nice for staff.

I have keys to both sides, but only one combo. Started off with a cut off wheel. EFF that. Out comes the plasma cutter.

Once in, I can take the back cover off the lock and manually manipulate the dials, press in the relocker, and she opens right up.

I ground a bevel on the hole and circle, welded them up inside and out. Will grind it smooth, hit it with some wrinkle finish Krylon and craigslist it up.

I'm not a great welder, but it'll do.

How long did it take you to cut out the lock?
How portable is your plasma cutter? Uses 220v?

I didn't cut out the lock, I just cut an access hole in the unseen side of the unit. The access hole, about 6", took less than 2 minutes. It took longer to charge the air compressor.

The plasma cutter is a Everlast 50P, fairly small and portable. 220 by default, 110 with a adapter.

I spent a little time testing stains to make sure I have the finish I'm looking for on my new safe cabinet which I started a thread about last weekend.
I found that vinegar helps age the wood and slightly subdue pine grain, which I really like. So I'm going with "VO".

Samples are pine, birch ply, pine.
B= Behr cedar, O= Olympic canyon brown, v= vinegar, P= plain.

I put a fender eliminator on my new bike today as well as a titanium slip on. It sounds great I think the bike lost almost 15 lbs just from the muffler.

What bike?

What bike?
My wife surprised me for fathers day and took me out bike shoping, she made a hefty down payment on a new Suzuki GSXS-750. I have been ridding a 1996 Bandit 600 since it was new. I got such great service from the bike I had to go with another Suzuki. I wanted something quick that would be easy on my old back.
