I am pretty much perplexed and seemingly backed into a corner with the situation with our beautiful 2001 Tundra TRD. It only has 88,000 miles on it and is beautiful up top but is really rusty on the bottom. A couple months back it began making wierd scraping noises in the front drivers wheel when the brakes were applied. I figured it was the backing plate rusting away and getting jammed up against the rotor. The parking brake has never really worked so I figured that big brake work was in order so we grounded the truck.

My son, who has the same truck with over 300,000 miles on it said he would take a look at it and try to fix it himself, having learned how on his own truck. Well, he came over and we learned that the wheel is rusted to the rotor-thingy and won't come off. He mentioned that there were 2 recalls back in the day for rust issues but research shows those have long since expired. Guys on the Tundra forums are still posting about issues like mine - some have found agreeable dealers that replaced the entire frame and gave them a loaner truck while they did that, others have been told by dealers to pound sand. Toyota says they will do a free inspection to determine the extent of the damage but then where do you go?

The truck books retail about $8500 but I'm guessing we'd be lucky to get half that in it's current condition. I'm not so cool that I can just walk away from 4 grand without wincing mightily so here I am. We'd like to get the truck fixed and gone. Anyone have any ideas or thoughts about what we can do with this situation?

Take it to Toyota and let them look at it. The worst that can happen is they'll say it's on your dime to repair, or maybe they'll get the factory to step up.

I had a late 90’s Tacoma that the wheels “bonded” to the rotors. I set it on jack stands, got under it and kicked them off.

Looking back that was probably a bad idea

Drive to Durham

Leave keys in and unlocked

Walk away

Profit

But not just any spot in Durham. West Durham, 9th Street, Tobacco district, that just gets you parking tickets. I recommend a 10-block radius from Main and 55; or one of the Latino chop-shops near 98.....

Wellons Village ... maybe beside the McDonald’s.

I have to do the same thing with the rear wheels on my 03 Tacoma. The steel wheels like to stick on the hubs (along with rear drums...on an 03 anything...)

My wheels in this particular truck were aluminum lol.

Use anti-sieze on the rotor hub where it makes contact with the wheel and you won't have to beat your Toyota wheels off.

Ah yes, the ol Galvanic Corrosion monster. Very familiar with it from the dirtbike days, when nobody knew what antiseize compound was....
I was 18, that was the day i discovered anti-seize

I used to just loosen all the lugnuts on one wheel and yard drive it until it pops loose.
