My dad gave me a rifle to "decorate" my first apartment, maybe more than 45 years ago. It was in really rough shape but I had it hanging horizontally above the door to my bedroom. It certainly didn't contribute much to my popularity with the ladies. o_O

I'd completely forgotten about it since moving to NC in 1991...until today. My wife and I were wandering around the Salisbury show and she was checking out a lot of rifles. That made me remember mine sitting somewhere in a closet. So, I dug it out and found a fair amount of rust (I didn't know anything about firearms when I hid it away and certainly never bothered to preserve it).

Any idea what this is, buried beneath the rust?

OMG!!!!!!!

Should I stop using Jeppo and register a new user name?

:(

Somehow my family ended up with 2 of those...one from each side but neither has the bayonet. We also have another stock that is not in great shape with the barrel but missing most of the mechanics.

Yeah I completely agree. A nut punch followed by a manly clap on the back is in order.

Reminds me of the cars in barns website.

Nice. Good for you

Okay ... before you do anything "cleaning" it just rub it down in Ballistol real good and let it sit for a couple days. Then take soft clothes and gently wipe it down and reapply Ballistol. After that find a person who really knows what conservation of firearms means and let them get thru it correctly. The old girl looks like she is in better shape than you might think ... no boogered screws, no major stock damage (likely very dry wood though), cleaning rod and bayonet there ... you have what I think is I gem under the surface dirt and light rust. Be careful with the action spring it might be a bit brittle. To me a good cleaning ... nothing heavy ... leaving the patina and check of the action you might even have a functioning Trapdoor!

Great advice. The rest of us should have already posted this we were just all too shocked at what he just pulled out of the closet lol.

Stunned.

Great find! Do get advice on restoration from a qualified person. And revel in ownership of such a fine piece of history!

Thing's just aching for a hydrodip. Maybe carbon fiber? Or leopard print.
My wife stopped and chatted with one of those "dip" guys today at the show. She's thinkin' maybe a paisley print with peace signs.

That'll cover the rust so I don't need to bother with the Ballistol, right?

Omg y'all are about to give me a stroke. I know you're kidding but just the thought of that makes my head pound.

I'm leaning in this direction...

But my wife correctly points out that won't cover the rust very well. I think we'll probably go with her preference.

Wow. And it's complete. As advised, be wary of any "cleaning" without consulting someone who knows.

You know you have to chop the barrel to 16", cerakote it in a cammo pattern, buy a spiked AR flashhider, AR adjustable stock, AR handguard so you can put a vertical grip and lase/flashlight, engrave some skulls and Molon LAbes so everyone know you are badass and maybe some eagles and Trumps for good measure.

Don't forget to reverse-engineer an AR safety lever into it even if nonfucntional.

Then later on sell it on gunbroker as ultra rater tactical trapdoor used to kill Commies in the American Revolution.

Blame it on my ancestors. :D

There must be a fine, something akin to spousal abuse for your infraction.

Since this entire story began with my wife admiring rifles in yesterday's show, she's been following everybody's comments. This morning she asked, "Do they know where we live? They have real guns that work!".

You should digicam duracoat the metal, drop it in an Archangel stock, drill and tap it, slap a $100 BSA scope and 30 bipod on it and refer to it as a "build". Then list it on Gunbroker for $2500 because it is now a "tackdriver". And don't let any idiot purists try to deter you. It is your rifle and if you want to make it 'better', then that is your right. They made almost 'a million of them, you know... :D
